I didn't know that. Saw Dizzy in a D.C. jazz club when he was still pretty young, young middle age. One of the greats. A true heir to Armstrong.

I had a personal story about Dizzy I posted this morning at http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/the-blues-you-dig-it#post-767695
Dizzy occasionally smoked a cigar but he favored the tobacco pipe.

Remember an especially vulnerable moment in a documentary about Dizzy when he was a little older. I think he was being asked to do another interview or go on to another party, and he commented offhandedly that he would need to consult with his wife. The neat thing was, it wasn't the least bit servile or over-dependent, more like he was someone who knew who had his back and didn't mind mentioning her. Good man.

Oh, Man! I've always loved his music, and now there's something else to love him for! I didn't know that he had smoked a pipe, but I have seen pictures of him with a cigar. Didn't seem to affect his lungs, though! Take that, tobacco Nazis...
