Of what is the stem made? In the images above it looks like a Cumberland.
I have an estate C.P.F. silver-banded billiard with a red Bakelite stem, and it is a fine smoker. May yours be likewise.

The pipe is stamped "real amber" but I think the material is actually amberoid. Maybe someone else can chime in with their opinion.

That's a nice old CPF. The stem is ruby Bakelite. Being that it's stamped as an amber, the Bakelite is probably an early replacement. Those amberoid stems were pretty easy to wear out or break. Finding a pipe with a rim cap that isn't banged up is damn near impossible. That one is pretty nice considering it was probably well used.
