I ran across this a couple days ago and I can't stop coming back to it.

This guy lives out in the woods and makes cherry wood pipes.

Linking to the foreward. Then if interests you click on the Zulu's Bolg link in the bottom right corner at the bottom of the first entry before the comments.

I suggest the reading the 1st installment of Cherrywood Start to Finish and the the conclusion.

The rest of the posts are all related and very interesting as well.

    Anyway...fascinating I think.

I've done a good bit of woodworking and this has me inspired to clean all the piled junk of my benches and order some Cherry stock and bits.

I won't see any communication directed to me here. I'm no longer active at this forum.

Good find. Seeing the process is pretty neat and so is that silver dollar template.

I ordered a piece of 2x2x18" cherry stock 18 inches of 3/4 inch cherry doweling and a straight filterless vulvanite bit. The bit is coming from the pimp my cob guy. I figure I can use a cob as a guide for stemming.

If I make anything decent I'll send you one Phil. Won't be done by Emmitt and likely won't be as cool. But it's not an overly difficult concept and I have enough cherry to screw up a couple!

Cherry wood pipes are great! I get a lot of cherry in my fire wood so I have a good supply. Just break it in gently and it will cake better than brier and give you a nice smoke.

If at first you don't succeed you are running about average.

Thanks Jonesing... Like I said, I have a lot of Apple Wood right now...

Art, I have that Ropp from eBay, I'll see how it does for me... Dr. Dave is making that "forever" stem for it and cleaning right now... Should be as good as new when I get home...

Neat link I'm waiting on briar blocks to come now, I'll post what I carve. I have a friend in Arkansas with a lot of fruit trees. I'm going to his farm in the near future to see what kind of wood I can get. If it's a lot I'll be willing to share.

Cherry is excellent, apple Is great too. I have used white oak with less that stellar results. LOTS of tannins . The main thing with most fruit woods is being very careful in drying. Seal the end grain with cheap latex paint to prevent splitting.

I ordered spindle turning stock which will likely need to dry a bit. Although I think I'll start messing with it right away. Should be a bit soft which is why the turners like it a little on the wet side.

Good way to get some practice with slightly more forgiving wood and get all the screw ups out of the way...hopefully.

Shouldn't have too according to the reading I've done. Cherry is considered an exceptional pipe wood and along with Olive second only to Briar and is non toxic (same with most fruit woods.

Sometimes turning stock is cased in wax to keep it from over-drying so it's not overly brittle when turned....or hacked at with hand tools by guys like me.

Well the only wood I have laying around are two slabs of redwood burl , has anyone ever heard or seem a redwood pipe . I know it used to make food grade bowls . and such as well as drinking water pipes .

    Not sure.

I do know that the pipe makers shy away from woods that naturally repel insects and such due to oils inherent in the wood. Redwood qualifies I would think.

But again I don't know for sure.

Maybe I'll make a pipe from a pressure treated 2X4. If I live we'll know anything is safe. I could name it Arsenic and Old Lace.

Art, do you have any pictures of the "Ropp" clones? I'd like to see them to get some ideas...

I guess the only problem with apple wood is they tend to "burn" through quickly... I guess I should make a dozen or so, should last me a lifetime...

I deal with Greenbush Presuure Treating and will attest that pressure treated lumber is not good for you . But you should make one for yourself that way I will know for sure with out contacting some one who knows for sure what the heck some people think they know from reading wiki . You know what I mean .

I will take some nice clear shots of the cherry pipes tomorrow and post them. The only problem I had with the apple wood pipe I cobbled together was that I lost it squirrel hunting. Caked up just fine and smoked pretty well.

I was talking with Dr. Dave Walker of Walker Briar Works... he said that he has quite a few Ropp pipes and they do taste like Cherry when smoked... I figured that my Ropp that I won off eBay would be a good dedicated pipe for a cherry blend... Not sure if apple wood tastes like apple or not...

    Sapo,
There's a lot of that going around lately.
Maybe a 5 day work week would cut down on mail's exposure to the postal service, and thereby improve the service. Not to mention slow the rate of postal rate increases.

I like to keep my public waiting.

    OK I lied.

Maybe I just don't have anything I'm overly proud of yet.....

Probably have something to amuse the masses fairly soon though. I had a fun few hours and have a decent start on things.

The beginning to my first Apple Wood pipe making experiment...

The wood is still wet and I got the stem from a "Basket" pipe I bought yesterday, just in case I like it!

I have more in the tools than anything else… so far what it has taken:
    Hand saw
    Finger Nails-Peel the bark
    ¾” Forstner Bit
    ½” Forstner Bit
    1/8” in drill bit

The beginning to my first Apple Wood pipe making experiment...

I think if you stopped now, it'd be good. It looks interesting with the unfinished bowl and the bark on the shank. The color of the stem really sets it off.

Then again, a nice dark stain wouldn't be a mistake either.

    Thanks guys...

Jonesing, the wood is off my Apple Tree's in my pasture, how much do you need?

Dudley, I had to cut a new shank, I didn't get the hole in the center of the first one... As you can see, I stripped the bark... The next one I'll leave natural w/bark on...

As the wood dries, the wood has been changing colors... right now there are a few orange streaks...

Half way there; I could actually smoke it at this stage, however, still damp wood… The only thing I’m lacking at this point is sanding and a finish… I was thinking just a “food” grade oil finish…

So far I’ve done everything "they" say not too… Wet wood, rush the build… Oh well… It’s my first…

On my cherry pipes I just hit them with wax. lets them color on their own . Cherry is super photo reactive so it darkens nicely.Apple also darkens but far more slowly What is real nice is the beautiful fawn colored heart wood. It's tricky to dry without cracking but well worth the hassles.

After the sanding block, it still needs lots of sanding... I'm thinking about a brass or copper ring on the shank... The bowl has one big knot at the front, you can see it in this picture... I guess it give it "character"

    Lawrence,

Without a tape measure, it is about 6" long, Bowl is 2.5" tall, 2" wide, 3/4" x 1.5" chamber and 3/8" walls...

So far I have about an hour into it, the most expensive part was the stem... (Basket pipe) $20.00, with about $20.00 in new tools, drill bits...

It's kind of what I was looking at for my first build... I don't think I could do a nose warmer in this style...

I have a new idea for the next one... I think I'll call it "puck"... I need some "freehand" push stems for that one...

Looking really good Phil! As far as being able to make a nose-burner/warmer with that style of pipe...just make another thick bowl like you've got (maybe a little thicker even), but put a taper fit stem right into the bowl! Voila

Well I attempted to create my next piece of “art”… As you can see there is no picture to go along with this post… I can honestly say that even a simple pipe as my last, it can get frustrating without the proper tools…

I decided not to use any finish on the first, but to keep it “natural”. The bottom of the bowl shows some signs of cracking in the heart of the wood. I've checked to see if it is still “tight” and everything seems to be fine.

I smoked the “Apple” wood pipe with no problems… The bowl never got hot and the tobacco (Sir Walter) burned like a champ… There is a nice black char in the bowl and no signs of “being on fire”… I rubbed my finger in the chamber and no residue was visible. The apple does leave a “sweet” taste, but nothing to impair the true tobacco flavor…

Here's my first finished stab at things. She smokes like a dream.

    I don't really like the bit but it's a p lip for a cob and I like P lips so....I used it.

Would have liked to get the fit just a bit better but I ruined one shank by over-sizing the mortise to make a perfect fit and figured I wouldn't press my luck. Plus it will wear some I guess. This is just sort of a utilitarian prototype thing for my smoking pleasure only. Looks are secondary.

    Show off?

Far from it. Sort of like virginal fumblings.

I like your apple tree pipe Phil. I'll tell ya what. I'll make you one of mine and you make me one of yours. Mine come with a money back guarantee....of course they are free but....still.

    It's fun though huh?

I was amazed how well this one smoked. I drilled it to 5/32 and likely then a smidge as I ran the bit by hand through the length once I drilled the mortise. That big airway is awesome.

I'm thinking it would be fun to snag junkers off ebay and spruce em up a bit. Make hot rods out of them by openign the airways, maybe refinishing etc.

Considering this cobbled together thing smokes unbelievably good, I'm now convinced just about any pipe will smoke good with the right attention.

Jonesing..., yours is awesome... I'll go for a swap... I'm not even sure what the airway on mine is... It smokes sweet, and has an excellent draw... It might be too big, but it does smoke...

On the show off "thing" I was just joking... I know I don’t have the right tools for wood working, now I have the fever, maybe I'll get a file... I tend to rush things, just to see if it will work or not...

The shape of your pipe is awesome...
