Ok, this is the question, when you light the bowl you light just the center of it or all the surface? Reason being if found if I try to light the entire surface of the bowl no matter what I use to light, matches or lighters, the rim of the bowl tends to be charred. So should be just lighted the center of the bowl?

I always moisten the rim with a bit o spit just before applying fire. This helps keep the rim from getting singed. Then I move the match or lighter over the surface to get the whole top going. A match gives better control.

I light the entire surface. Quick circular motion is the trick to avoid charring.

I light all the way around the periphery, especially if I'm doing a re-light on a bowl that wants to burn straight down the center.
