I have a Calabash pipe I am planning to sell and I don't want to mislead by describing it wrong. How can I tell if it is gourd or some sort of composite material ? Also whether the bowl is Meerschaum or porcelain ?

Thanks, Rich

Gourd is very light weight and will have a fibrous texture inside. It will also lack wood grain on smooth sections outside that a briar or mahagony "gourd" would have. Meerschaum is very soft, you can easily scratch it with your fingernail, and it will feel sort of like soapstone where it's unwaxed, like inside the bowl. If it's block meer you should be able to lick your finger and feel it stick slightly when you press it to the wall of the chamber. As for your pipe, I have another Pioneer just like it and it has a real gourd body. I know my bowl is not meerschaum, I believe it is porcelain.

Thanks. I guess I was bothered by the texture on the gourd. Is that something that could be added ?
