I've been waking up in cold sweats wondering how much I overpaid for a Dunhill Shell Briar. For fun, I thought I'd ask the fun loving fellows and ladies how much I did spend on this pipe; I'll reveal how much the price was in a few days. The pipe is a Dunhill Shell Briar Classic, circa 1960, very nicely refurbished from what I can see, about 5 1/2 inches.

There is no beauty without some strangeness in proportion.

On ebay it would probably sell for $150-200. But if you like it, it doesn't matter that much if you paid a little more. It appears you bought it from a dedicated pipe seller, so you probably had some additional assurance that there were no hidden issues. That's worth at least a small premium I would say.

What group size is it? Group 3 just under $200.00. Group 4 - 5 $200.00 - $250.00. Would need to see nomenclature strength plus rim condition.

Good question. I favor large chambers, so this shell is 4. 3 is just too small. Estimates are getting warm...

$125 base, I'd go $50 over if condition warranted

Is the stamping strong or weak? The stem / shank junction look like the stem is thinner than the end of the shank. Is that true or just the photograph? Any tooth marks?

$100. I never pay more than $100 for a pipe.

No info about either, but I researched the seller and they appear to know their pipes, sell nothing but pipes, and even wrote a few blogs about pipes. As for stems, I actually prefer acrylic stems, so no problem there. And while I'm excited over getting a Dunhill shell, smoking quality always out-trumps aesthetics, although in this case I think i might have found a perfect balance.

I'm sure I can find something for you for $100, though. Got a cracked Peterson 107, and another 307 on eBay .

Doesn't that one have a vulcanite stem?

I am going 236. But in the end, does it matter as long as you like it and it smokes well....?

Pipe List is a reworked selling concept of Ben's. I think they debuted the new name at the WCPS last year. Ben's has been on eBay (BIN) and attending show for years and always had some great looking pipes that never seem to move because of the price.

Dunhills on ebay tend to drift high, so I'd guess $320.

I don't know if I should tell you now what the price was: the shell arrived today. You lot are a very observant group. But to answer some questions first, the stem is original vulcanite, or at least I speculate so because the white spot is not quite as white as it once was decades ago. The stamping, as you amazingly noted, is a bit faded but legible if you know what you are looking for. No toothmarks, and otherwise flawless stem if you're not bothered by a hazy white dot.
The entire pipe is someone diminutive, but I'm a Peterson fan, and the virginal smoke--by me--with the bowl loaded with Lane Dark Red was nothing short of incredible. I didn't think a pipe could smoke like this. So when I tell you I paid the Buy It Now of $300, go ahead, laugh yourself silly. I got my Dunhill, and I'm pretty darn sure it won't be my last. As for those of you who don't have a Dunhill--nyah, nyah, nyah nyah nyah!

I wouldn't laugh at that price! It certainly is on the higher end, but it's a nice pipe and you enjoy it! Plus, you didn't have to worry about bidding and all that.

That's not laughable at all. It's what you wanted to pay, so that's what it's worth.

I have 16 of them. All but 3 have stayed in the drawer ever since I started smoking Barlings.

$300 doesn't seem too much for a first rate bit of Brit wood as long as condition inside as well as outside is top notch.

A quick look at Briar Blues tells me that 300.00 seems about average for the pipe.

Oddly enough. Bents are much less.

I've been enjoying the Dunhill for the past two days, exhilarating in the experience of smoking this wonderful British briar, admiring its shaping, it's skillfully staining. Its flawless stem, all those elements that make the perfect pipe. My only gripe:the diminutive dimensions. But the pipe is so otherwise so perfect that the smallness is already a non-issue. As for the price, that's simply not an issue. It's just paper.

It was chomping down on a Dunhill stem for the first time that got me hooked on the brand although size matters and I sold off my Patent collection early on to concentrate on newer, larger Gr6, oda's and Collector's.
