A buddy on Facebook bought a lot of pipes recently which included this curious piece.

I've never heard of a Barlings with a briar stem, so I assume it is not original

It appears to have been sold through Rattrays.

Any thoughts?

Perfectly possible. What is the model number under the Barling's Make logo? Does it begin with AW?
One of the fun aspects of the company is that they experimented with "idea" pipes. One of those, of which I own an example, is a Barling AW22. The "AW" stands for "All Wood" and the pipe has a wooden stem that screws into the shank.

The stamp is AW11. All Wood - go figure! Any idea on what time frame? My buddy thinks 1930's but a screw in wooden stem would seem earlier?

Mine has an orific slot, so 1920's. Wouldn't be surprised if these weren't around in the 1930's as well.
I have another of their unusual pipes, a TP - travel pipe - that breaks down into 3 pieces, stem, shank, and bowl. The shank screws into the bowl. The stem is a traditional vulcanite tenon twist stem. Disassembled you can easily tuck the pipe into a vest pocket, or a very tiny space. Perfect for your hiking kit!

I love these old briar-stemmed pipes,

the Barling AW variant is quite unique and cool to see,

I wonder what kind of production run they had with them?
I wish we had access to production numbers, that'd be neat.
One thing I did notice about the AW's (just these 2 examples in the thread which are the only ones I've ever seen), but it looks to me as if both the shanks are short and the stems appear extra-long...it makes me wonder if they reserved odd stummels to make the AW's?

Do any of the regular production Barling's have such short shanks?

Very cool pipe! It seems like Barling wasn't the only maker to do this, too. Apparently Rossi made some briar stem pipes in 1930 that Chris Morgan is now selling off from his website.

Wow,

those Rossi pipes are quite pricey considering the multiple putty fills and what appear to be lacquered bowls,

but I must say, the bits look very very nicely made - flat bite instead of orific as many of the oldtimey allbriars tended to be.
I have a modern Genod and it has a thick orific bit which is surprisingly comfortable,

you would never think so by looking at it.
You can pick up a Genod for under $90,

they're somewhat hard to find though,

I have a small subset from my collection consisting of briar stems,

having 6 of them...
...I've kind of not been actively pursuing them lately, now I'm reminded that it'd be good to have a 7 day set,

gotta keep this in mind now!

Sandblast briar-stemmed pipes are difficult to find so I often settle for a smooth finish,

but prefer blasts if possible,

my last allbriar came complete with a very killer blast!!

Nice looking pipe. Kaywoodie had them too. Theres a matched set on ebay from the 1950's but somebody chewed thru the stem. I'd love to have them but have no idea who could repair them. I'd want to keep the original stems on them.http://thumbs.ebaystatic.com/images/g/wVAAAOSwUuFW1Oy6/s-l225.jpg

The Kaywoodie AllBriars are pretty neato too, they often fetch good coin when in mint condition,

I think that they only made 'em for a few years in the early 50's?
Going back to Chris Morgan,

He also did a limited run of monoblock (all-one-piece) allbriar pipes made by him and sold them at a very reasonable cost,

I'm kicking myself now for not picking one up when I had the chance, but I was snobbish about the lack of a proper button and decided not to get one...they are pretty damn cool though!!!

That is the pipe I posted to start this thread. It's now its 2nd round with a BIN. Who knows what this should sell for? (there is no precedence). Apparently, what he went with twice, was too much (I had suggested a reserve of $200).

I don't know myself.
What I do know though is that they very scarcely show up on the open market and it's probably one of the more rare Barling's Make pipes out there!
