I never used to like the look of bamboo on a pipe. Now, with all this bamboo pipe porn floating around, it's starting to grow on me. One question: when a pipe is made with a bamboo stem, is there some sort of tube (like an InnerTube) lining it, or is it just drilled? I always thought bamboo was hollow and had a pretty big hole through the middle of it. I would think that would give a hugely open draw. ???

Bamboo has a soft pith you can push out with a coat hanger or drill, so the diameter varies with the implement used.. I'd imagine most bamboo stemmed pipes use an inner tube, though I don't own any.

I was just looking at some on Vermont Freehand's website. I see the pith you're talking about; it looks like it would be extremely difficult to control the ID while you are tooling it.

The bamboo is hand drilled to desired internal diameter. Usually attached to the briar via stainless steel tubing with the same Internal diameter. The tenon is usually also the same stainless steel tubing, thus keeping the internal diameter the same throughout the pipe.
If you look up Grant Batson, Steve Linsky, or my pipes (not that I'm in the same league with Grant or Steve!)on Instagram you should see some pre assembled views of bamboo pipes in progress!

@ebklodt- thanks for the info. As soon as I find someone with an Instagram account, I will definitely check that out. This forum is actually my farthest foray into any kind of social media to date!

The inner SS tubing usually will not run the entire length of the bamboo. Just where it attaches to the briar and stem.

I too seem to be liking the looks of the bamboo shank pipes as time goes on, didn't care much for them at first. I still like the look of the dark bamboo over the light coloured bamboo though. Just my preference. :puffy:

That clears up a lot! Thanks for the pics. I swear, one of these days someone will drag me into the late 1980's and I'll get more computer savvy.

ebklodt said it right on the small sections of stainless tubing. I had one guy tell me to run stainless all the way through as it would keep the bamboo from ghosting. While I am sure that would prevent ghosting it defeats the purpose of bamboo absorbing moisture and giving you a dry smoke. Bamboo will ghost though and I would have bamboo pipes dedicated to certain blends. A pipe for English, VA's. VaPers, etc.
@ jkrug I agree on the black bamboo over the white. I will have 2 bamboo pipes posted up soon that I am making for scrooge.

For most of my pipe smoking career I've stayed away from bamboo shanks. I just didn't like the look. But I was gifted a bamboo shanked Tsuge; what a great smoker. It's helped me re-evaluate my outlook. Oh yeah, I really am drawn to black bamboo.

Eltang uses a full length stainless tube and a reversed tenon. I use that or a carbon fiber full length tenon- picked that up from Joao Reis…Incredibly strong, and moisture is not an issue….
