With someone with both Austrian roots and family, yes the Viennese are a breed apart. I agree with pipe smoking being a part of the culture though. Lots of great Austrian carvers through the years, and we did give the world Meerschaum :D

I have to agree heartily with your comments. Pipe smoking is part of culture. Also, the point is society is not to make everyone conform, but to cut down on destructive behaviors while increasing constructive ones. Pipe and cigar smoking is not as destructive as people think, and more constructive than they will acknowledge.
