Anyone 3d Printing Pipes, Tampers, Lighter Cases?

I'm thinking about printing a pipe out of pla, along with tamps using 357 shell casings for the bottom.

I'd probably line the inside of the bowl with high temp jbweld or plaster of paris and then coat with pipe mud.

The mud recipe I'd use would either be honey/cigar ash mix or cigar ash sour cream mix.
Anyone done this yet? Using fusion 360 along with a good 3d printer the possibilities are endlesss.

As long as the pipe isn't smoked too hard, I doubt the pla would melt but who knows. I'll have to try it and find out.
I'll keep you guys posted but if anyone else has already beat me to it, please post your pics and recommendations.

Interesting idea I suppose. But, my question is, why? I take it you aren't a fan of briar. Have you tried meerschaum or cobs? All smoke well and handle heavy use. My fingers are my tampers and I haven't left the house without them once. And, I haven't found any need to put my lighters inside a second case.
I'm not denigrating your enthusiasm or curiosity. I just don't see a need.

Just for kicks. Having over 10 briars in my rotation, along with cobs, I don't really need another pipe.
The 3d printer has been sitting for months. Time to knock the dust off of it.

I used fusion 360 to design/modify models so just about anything is doable.

You know? Why the hell not. I see stuff on TV all the time that's redundant or, even useless but, companies make such just because they can. And, with enough advertising they can sell it to people who really have no need. So ... go for it "baccy." Have some fun.

If fused/metled correctly, 3d filament is incredibly durable/strong. A briar or meerschaum lined bowl would be killer I'm thinking.

That's a good looking pipe.
I supposed I should clarify that I have no intention of selling anything. This is just for the novelty of the hobby. I have regularly given away 3d printed items for free because it's a rewarding hobby just watching the cnc machine run.
Maybe this topic would be better left to a 3d printed forum. I'll stick to tooling on the lathe if making something here.

I hear you there, I wouldn't smoke out of plastic either. With a briar/plaster lined bowl I wouldn't hesistate though.

The cost of the tamp shown above is almost zero in 3d printer filament, minimal expense in electricity. Don't know why people charge so much for 3d prints, I just give them away.
Something like that could easily be made with minimal cad design time.
Just a note, I've never sold anything online and never will. I've found there are too many problems going down that rabbit hole.
If I'm still active on the forum come x-mas time, never know what could happen. Keep enjoying the hobby guys.

Here are some 3d models of pipe stands. They might lend themselves to being made of plastic better.
Also, I'm not sure what plastics you can print, but stems come to mind. Churchwarden, curved, whatever strikes your fancy to play with, I guess. Can you edit?

I like that little jack-stand, OP. You need to make a little Haynes manual to go with it. And a little man cursing loudly with a wrench in hand :mrgreen:
I wouldn't want to smoke out of plastic either, but one application I do think this would be well suited for is baccyflaps.

I would love for you to post your thoughts and results if you continue down this path. An alternative would be to make a pipe that accepts Falcon bowls as they are readily available in both briar and meerschaum.

Ok, I like the idea. The pipe accessories like stands and tamps can be made inexpensively and in interesting shapes PLUS the pipe idea is intriguing as well. The pipe could be a true “beater” type. I’d love to see some pictures.

Using a 3D printer to make a pipe would be fun just to say he did it. Depending on what sort of material used, it could be smokable. I've heard of pipes made of Bakelite and I have a Brylon pipe which is some sort of resin and wood flour. I don't much care for it but I have used it a few times. In the early 1960s Super-Temp Corporation began making plastic pipes with pyrolytic graphite bowl liners called The Pipe. Why not make a pipe in a 3D printer? Sounds like a fun project and it would be unique.

I am surprised that one of the huge pipe companies like Gubbles or Savinelli have not started to mass produce 3d printed pipe stems.
Maybe the cost of cast vulcanite and acrylic stems are still much cheaper for them to make?
Has any other pipe companies experimented with 3D printings besides Vauen?

To most craftsmen, the whole idea of 3D printing makes us want to vomit. Guys don't turn to working in wood, metals, or stones, because they love high tech, but because they love the art of making something by hand.
Just like that moron in another thread that had no idea how to cut a circle out with using some form of computer technology, because of course, humans are too stupid to have built the pyramids, so... aliens. : puffy

And, it makes sense to me that the first company to make a 3D printed pipe was a German company.
3D printing has its place. I am not a total Luddite. But, I do notice that the more we let technology take over aspects of humanity, the stupider and more sensitive we become.
