I am starting my journey into smoking pipes and I found a rack of briars all priced at nine dollars in an antique shop during a recent trip to Montana. I bought this one, and while perusing the shop I did some cursory internet querying for "Capt. Ahab" "9456" "MADE IN ENGLAND" all of which turned up nothing. From these two photos, could anyone give me any leads?

From the shape number and the nomenclature I would say that it's a GBD second, and a nice one at that.

I love those old English "rejects" and "seconds" as they would all be considered first quality by today's standards.

Greetings! I have a pipe possibly from a similar era -- it also says "GBD" on the side of the stem. What does this mean? I also have a similar four digit number. On the flat base (which is awesome because I can stand it up without a stand) it reads: GBD Prehistoric. London England 9436. I also find it interesting that it has a clear stem. I have included a couple pictures. I paid $5 for it.
I also found this pipe stand with old decaying pipes included. Don't know anything about it, but they all have tiny bowls and are falling apart. I paid $3.75 for the entire thing just because I thought they were a neat conversation piece.
Lastly, I found this neat pipe stand complete with "humidor jar" and original little paper instructions. Paid...I think $35 at an antique store. Just thought I'd show off a bit since my friend, Tyler posted his new find! I would love any information on any of this if anyone is knowledgeable. My pics are big, so I'll just attach links.

Note: I did find a tiny bit related on my pipe as follows:
GBD: black sandblast. -TH

Available with Clear Persplex, Vulcanite, Pearl and Copper Acrylic -catalog ( 1976 )
A website listed GBD line name models and "Prehistoric" was on there. Interesting stuff!

I'll second Roth with the big ups on the GBD line and welcoming you to the forum.
Your GBD Prehistoric is a monster find for less than a five dollar bill! Not only is it beautiful but I'll bet it ends up being one of your best burners.
The 3.75 rack with pipes is another steal. Any rack will usually bring a sawbuck. And, it looks like one or two of the pipes might be salvageable. (The rack needs a lot of TLC. Do some research and bring that old soldier back to life.)
You probably overpaid a bit for the humidor/rack combo, but you're still good money ahead with your first two purchases. It looks great with those four open pipe holders.

A little late to this post, but for what it's worth... that's identical to my GBD Prehistoric. A pre-1980 estate that I bought last year. I love the pipe! (If I knew how to add a pic I would.)

I'm a bit late to the party, but that pipe is identical to a vintage GBD that I own. I agree with others who have said that it is a GBD second, there is no doubt in my mind. My GBD version is a great pipe -- I hope that this one smokes like a champ for you.
