Hello everyone,
This is my first post besides introducing myself. I have honestly smoked my new pipe twice. Its a Dr.Grabow and I've smoked one bowl of Prince Alberts Cherry/Vanilla and one bowl of Captain Blacks (White). I've been using a regular lighter and have noticed its hard to keep lit (Probably because I haven't packed it right) and well my tongue actually feels slightly swollen towards the back of my mouth and feels like I burned it on a hot food but it wasn't it was tongue bite I'm assuming.
Also I realized I had a horrible aftertaste the next morning. It was still a very pleasurable experience and I love the pipe time. I was just wondering if there's a reason I may of gotten the tongue bite and the bad aftertaste. I have never been a smoker so its all new to me so that could be some of it.
I hope everyone has a great halloween!

i havent had the after taste. im a fairly new pipe smoker as well. if you like captain black white, which is actually captain black original i suggest captain black royal. royal is the one in the dark blue almost black pouch.i had the same problem with my tongue. i started with captain black royal and paladin cherry.id say its a mixture of lounge bite, bad packing(dont worry you will get better), and the tobacco burning hot(possibly from puffing too much)

Welcome xoibsurferx. I'm a new pipe smoker as well. I started with a Dr. Grabow pipe years ago; then quit for several years and started again a few months ago. I started back with a corncob pipe and found it very easy to work with - and I'm not worried about "messing it up" since it only cost around $7. I recommend you experiment with corncobs. As for packing, I have watched many YouTube videos that were helpful to me. I'm not great at it yet but I can keep the tobacco burning. I also found that when I started, I tried to smoke to fast - I don't know if this is a problem you might be having. I think I was so stressed to "do it right" that I didnt enjoy it at first. Take it slow, and don't be afraid to experiment. Good Luck.

As for the tongue bite, it sounds like you just smoked the toby hot because you were puffing pretty often to keep it lit. Next time set the toby out to dry for 30+ min to an hour or so(it varies, experiment with it) before you pack your pipe and then give it a go.
As for aftertaste... brush your tongue and use some mouthwash before you go to bed. If you're smoking before you go to bed then the brushing right after is going to burn and is just not really reccommended because a lot of pipe smokers like the aftertaste after they smoke a bowl of their beloved backy.
Dry it out

Pack it al sorts of which ways to see what works

Puff it slowly so you don't burn your tongue

And brush you tongue if you don't like the after taste
Peace out. 8)

I let my captain black pouch open for a WEEK to dry it out. That stuff is wet wet wet! My local tobacconist told me to set out a bowls worth over night or even pack the bowl the night before you smoke it, go to work then smoke it after work. Check the pipe videos on this sight. Try different ways to find what works best for your pipe/tobacco/you.
Dry it out, and slow down.

This advice worked wonders for me

Thank you for all the replies. I really did enjoy my first two smokes besides the aftertaste and tongue bite. Someone told me to try lighting with matches to prevent the tobacco burning as hot.
I did notice the Captain Black was very wet compared to the prince Albert stuff. So I'll give the drying out idea a try.
Also I'll brush my tongue to help prevent the aftertaste.
Now I've been curious because I hear a lot of talk about the English blends and how great they are. Any recommendations to start with? Anywhere online I could order samples cheap to see what I like?
Thanks again for all the replies!

Welcome to the site.
Propylene glycol and other humectants are heavily used in drugstore tobaccos and jar blends to keep them from drying out. Some of these tobaccos will not dry out if left loose on a newspaper for a week.
You may take a small amount of dry burley, neutral in flavor and add it to the OTC blends to dry down the PG.
Granger or Carter Hall are two mild / neutral burleys that come to mind.

Thanks for the advice. Ive heard I should try a non commercial tobacco but have no idea where to go. Theres a pipe shop that isnt too far from me and they may be worth a visit to find some different blends.
Ill try the sugar trick and I bet my tongue bite came from puffing too hard to try and keep it lit. Ill get it eventually.

Everyone has their own favorite place to shop, but I recommend 4noggins.com. They've been a dependable and fast place for me to shop, as a beginner.

I gave the place locally a call and they told me to come in sometime and they'll help me pack properly, and everything. They are about the only pipe shop in my area that specializes in pipe smoking. Its call McCranies.
If all else fails and their prices are too steep them I'll shop online.
They even told me the tongue bite is pretty common.

As you progress in the pastime of pipe smoking you will encounter all sorts of trials and tribulations

such a tongue bite -- so ubiquitous it is almost considered a rite of passage among us. No matter what

difficulties and frustrations you encounter, rest assured that at some future point in time you will find it

TOTALLY WORTH THE EFFORT. :puffy:
ps. McCranies has a national reputation -- good B&M. Try their Red Ribbon.

I have really enjoyed this post and the replies. Every pipe smoker started out this way. Packing correctly and smoking slowly is the key. It takes time and practice. It does come with time.
As for English blends, they are my normal smoke, and also need experience to appreciate. Try as many blends as you can and learn what you like.

Thank you for the replies! I'll definitely go to that shop and check it out. I love learning and well if they're willing to teach me a few tips and tricks then I'm all for that. Plus I'm sure they have some tobaccos that aren't big brands like Captain Black and such which would be very nice to try.
The community on here is great and its very welcoming which is great.
I may have to try a English blend to see if I like it. The fun part is trying all of the different tobaccos and finding the perfect fit or fits since each tobacco can be smoked for different moods.

Yeah usually tongue bite in the beginning is just because of puffing too often and sometimes too harshly in the attempt to keep the pipe lit. Relights should not be worried about. Most people that I've known who've smoked pipes for twenty year or more still have around four or five relights on average. The major things to remember are to be careful packing the tobacco (don't forget to check the draw before lighting), do a nice even charring light then tamp the tobacco lightly to even out the ash and give it one more lighting, and after that don't forget to tamp every so often. Tamping the ash down helps the ember stay on the unburned tobacco and keeps you lit longer. Some blends do tend to require a little drying out. MacBaren is notorious for having their tobacco more moist than usual in the tin/pouch. Tobacco that's too moist will be a pain to light and keep lit and will more than likely make your pipe gurgle like hell. Keep the chin up and enjoying your smokes. You'll get the hang of it soon.
