Bought this a while back. Tried to learn a little history first but there is not much on the Internet despite spending a moderate amount of time looking. Pipedia has several paragraphs and some pictures but very little on the earlier pipes.This forum has several entries on Orlik but doesn't mention the serif script or the Old Bond Street Don't know why more information is not out there?? This is a smallish Lovat. The Orlik name is in sarif script with Of Old Bond Street underneath. On the right side is Made in England and the shape number C37. It does have a small stinger as well. Needs a little cleaning and should be ready to go. Any history, dating or comments always welcomed. Thanks, Hoppes

Old Bond Street is listed in the pre-Cadogan era grades, and with the brass ring logo, that's a winner.

Sadly, Mike Lankton let his "Cake & Dottle" website go. He was the web authority on Orlik pipes.

Funny stamping. Orlik of Old Bond Street briars used to be stamped with A for the grade and had a hand cut stem,

also stamped in the stem.

Orlik Corona briars were stamped C for the grade and Orlik Corona.

Before 1974 Orlik pipes were stamped London Made and after Made in England as they moved the factory to

Shoeburyness in Essex ( Dennis Orlik to me 8th June 1978)
In the 50ties when Corona was a new grade it had a X in the stem instead of the O.

By the way. This pipe have the Corona colour not the Old Bond Street Colour which was naturel,but it

is indeed stamped as an Old Bond Street.
Here are the prices from 1965 in Denmark.

Spec.Sel. Straight Grain 250, Old Bond Street 182, Supreme 100, Corona 78, De Luxe 49,50

Captain Black 31,50
And January 1956 in England

Selected st grain 120/- Old Bond Street 60/- De Luxe 21/6 No Coronas
In the 1959 Orlik catalog Corona is mentioned as " The new style Orlik Corona Briar is a good quality pipe

finished in an attractive colour to enhance the beauty of the grain........."

Yes, catalogs from 1954, 1959 some pages missing, 1965, 1972 and 1978 in colour.

And a 1/1 page ad from Punch 24 jan 1923 : " Is a guinea too much to pay for a pipe"?

i agree with jensen. the made in england stamp dates your pipe to after the move to 14 vanguard way, shoeburyness in 1974. as i recall orlik lost its longtime london factory on ashbrook road through the english equivalent of eminent domain (called "compulsory purchase" in the uk); in response orlik pursued a "trade disturbance" claim against the borough of islington.
as for the model, as jensen says it was almost at the top of the orlik line. the "old bond street" was introduced a year or so after the company moved its showroom from chiswell to old bond in 1946; i'd say about 1947/48.
a bit more trivia about the corona: as jensen remarked, the model represents an interesting case of a pipe that changed stem stamping over time, from a cross to the classic orlik brass "o" insert. the corona was actually introduced no later than 1928, and had the "x" stamping on the stem at least through 1954. the changeover to "the new style orlik corona briar" happened by 1956, and at that time the stem was changed too.

Lovat (love-it) is a great shape. I have a compact Johs lovat with a good sized bowl. That's a snappy looking pipe, and seems in excellent condition.

Sorry, I couldn't help it. That stinger looks like the Jamshidi needle used for bone marrow biopsies. :lol:
