I remember seeing some information on the web that these pipes were made for Abercrombie by "LMB FRANCE". Those pipes had the Abercrombie name and the words "IMPORTED BRIAR." But LMB is also the name of France's professional basketball league, and the pipe you pictured says "MADE IN ENGLAND," so it's a bit confusing, to say the least. :roll:
How far they have fallen from they former glory. A&F used to be a outdoorsman type store. Now they are just a annoying mall store. There is a pretty good movie called "Mans favorite sport" stars Rock Hudson..Really good movie about fishing..Anyway he works at A&F in the movie, and their are pipe smokers too!
Yes, A&F used to be a premier sporting goods store, and Ernest Hemingway would go there
to buy prime quality rifles for hunting big game in Africa, and other serious safari equipment.
They did not have beefcake posters on the walls in those days. Speaking of this A&F pipe,
I had for many years a L.L. Bean pipe, likely made for them by Dr. Grabow. It was a sturdy
thick-walled pot, and its only short-coming was a stinger. I finally consolidated it and several
other pipes into a pipe I liked better, but it was a good item of Americana, I thought.
