Dropped a dime on these today. Going under glass once they come in... Scared to smoke them. ?

I'd be irreverent about going ahead and smoking pipes. Those are some handsome long shanked shapes. For some reason, I always think of these as the stateliest shapes, but that's some association distinct to me, I think.

No idea who Tony Soderman is or was, but he would likely have wanted you to smoke them. I do have two pipes I will never smoke because there will never be more of them so I understand that side too.

Tony was a very well known personality in the piping community who had a wealth of knowledge about the history and lore of pipes. If he had wanted to smoke these pipes he would have, but they were part of an award winning collection of what he considered the finest examples of long shanked pipes, one that he spent years assembling, and that he used to display at shows.

Of course, Tony passed a couple of years ago, so what he would have wanted done with them is kind of moot.

Exactly. I'm not going to smoke them...

Here's an example of my thought process:

I own four different Japanese swords all made by masters in their own right. One is modern, three are antiques. The three antiques were made to be used, but should not be any longer. The other one is very capable of being used, but should not be used.

See my point?

I'm a custodian for this type of pipe.
