Assuming you aren't sick and that's why you can't taste, slow down and load the pipe looser. If you're using a filter you can smoke without it.

Not being one of those guys who can taste everything in a blend I would recommend trying a medium English blend in your pipe and be sure you are smoking it slow enough. Easy enough to tell if you're smoking slow enough. No tongue bite whatsoever.
