    Penzance vs Margate....

Will people soon be trading Penzance for “vintage” Orlik Nightcap? I know, I’m being a wisea$$.

H.L. Savory & Co. Ltd. Pipes as Smokers?

Great detective work! Fooled me!!!! It should clean up nicely - cool find!

    Penzance vs Margate....

Margate to me has more of the church incense thing going on than Penzance. It also strikes me as having a briny, almost olive tin note at first. Interesting stuff!

H.L. Savory & Co. Ltd. Pipes as Smokers?

The shape matches a Savory’s sitting poker I was able to find with a quick Google search, but that certainly appears to be a replacement stem borrowed from a Stanwell.

    Score!!!!!

Fair point. Lancers is sort of one-dimensional, but when I’m in the mood, it’s a great dimension!

FVF is picky too. Dry it out a bit (sorry for unsolicited advice, but that helps a lot with this blend).

    Score!!!!!

Glad you got to try it! I’m a fan of both, but Sable is right with Stonehaven. Hot, moist air if too wet. Penzance is definitely more straightforward and less particular. If you like that style, there are lots of similar blends. On the cheap end, I like Lancer’s Slices. For Pease blends, I...

    Very Sad News

The beautiful tributes remind me that the truly rich amongst us are those who are brave enough to be themselves while blessing others with their kindness and generosity of spirit. Based upon the admiration and gratitude expressed on this thread by both those who knew the man well and those who...

    Rare (Or getting There) Tobaccos

@alaskanpiper - As one of the others on this thread have said, once you have been here awhile, post about something you would like to try (or trade for), and likely one of the many nice folks on this forum will work something out with you. Note that some of the ones that act the crabbiest...

    Rare (Or getting There) Tobaccos

Sable, as per usual, has it right. When I started in this hobby, I hunted what was rare. Some of it I really do enjoy, so I'm glad that I went to the trouble, but I also admit that some of it I wanted to try - and to "have" - because it was rare and I thought it would be "cool" to have a stash...

What tobaccos to cellar and other obscure tips?

I think that's what the "Old London" series was all about. I'm not saying G. L. Pease is, in fact, Jack the Ripper, but I've never seen them together.

What tobaccos to cellar and other obscure tips?

"One of the things I've wondered about is how Companies like Mac Baren and the late lamented McClelland, could still produce pungent Syrian Latakia blends more than a decade after the last harvest, given that Latakia has a relatively short shelf life. It's not like the last production runs of...

I Have Not Defected To Cigars

Cigars are nice in the summer, and definitely seem lower maintenance when one is trying to read or otherwise multitask. Nice change of pace.

    Epic Sights You Cannot Forget

I rather enjoy the increasingly absurd Royal Yacht posts. They have a certain Chuck Norris brag quality. And yes, he does smoke RY from a pipe made of the dried bones of a vanquished foe.

    Is There A Penzance Equivalent?

Wrong, sir! Wrong! Under section 37B of the contract signed by him, it states quite clearly that all offers shall become null and void if - and you can read it for yourself in this photostatic copy - "I, the undersigned, shall forfeit all rights, privileges, and licenses herein and herein...

    Is There A Penzance Equivalent?

Ten to Midnight, Brebbia #9 Latakia Flake, Quiet Nights and Lancer's Slices are all usual suspects mentioned when this topic arises. All good smokes - none exactly like Penzance of course, but some are at least in the same ballpark. Who knows - many people on the forum like at least a couple of...

    The Nicotine Effect

I have read that blood sugar plays a key role in the metabolization of nicotine. I believe Russ O himself has recommended some chocolate prior to smoking a heavy blend (or during) to help offset the impact.

Forget Their Holes, What Did They Cram in Their Mouths?

http://pipesmagazine.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/album/12760/orson-welles-1.jpg This image previously posted by Stan Laurel certainly could be a Dunhill (or a Savory's).
