    New Zealand Briar Society

I am glad to see that there are other Kiwis here. I only smoke one or two pipes a week. Mainly because of the price. Fifty grams of Erinmore costs around $60 for 50 grams. Other brands can cost around $80-$90, and the selection we have is extremely limited. Very few shops sell pipe tobacco, and...

    Scratched bowl

Thanks for the tip, but given I am overseas, I won't risk shipping it away. And I have found that after smoking it a couple of times, the scratches don't seem nearly so bad.

    My first English blend

I haven't tried any of those listed. The range we can get in my country is very limited. But I used to smoke Dunhill Flake, which is a lovely medium strength straight Virginia tobacco.

    Scratched bowl

One more thing. I had rarely smoked it in the past, but I smoked it today. I had forgotten what a beautiful pipe to smoke it was. It is my new favourite.

    Scratched bowl

P.S. - I can only ever remember seeing my Dad smoking a pipe once, as he had swtiched to cigarettes long before I was born. But my Mum told me a couple of days ago that he smoked a pipe when he was in the army during World War II. So that makes it even more special.

    Scratched bowl

Thank you for the advice, everyone. I have hardly ever smoked it, so smoking it a bit more would probably help. I am very wary of sanding pipes. For reasons I cannot recall, I decided to sand the varnish off my brand new Dr Plumb 5031 (?) around 27 years ago to make it look more natural. (OK, I...

    Scratched bowl

There are some reasonably deep grooves, which occurred some time during my up to 20 years of not smoking a pipe. I really have no idea how this happened, but I suspect I might have foolishly left it loose in a drawer at some stage. This was my father's pipe, so I do want to do what is best for it.

    Scratched bowl

One of my pipes has some bad scratches on the bowl. Should I sand off the varnish or just leave it?

    Future of Erinmore?

Erinmore is one of the few brands that are easy to get over here. Most of the few shops that sell pipe tobacco only have Erinmore and/or Borkum Riff and/or Amphora Red. Anything else requires a trip into the city.

    Grow Your Own Tobacco?

I have only just discovered this conversation. I am planning to grow some tobacco do this summer. (I am in the southern hemisphere, so it is currently the middle of winter here.) I have been seriously researching home growing, curing and blending since I rejoined the Brotherhood of the Briar a...

Tobacco Products Are Now Forbidden From Being Displayed In Shops In New Zealand

I would be wary of taking a chance on trying to sneak it in undeclared, as NZ is even stricter on biosecurity than it is on smoking. Importing undeclared plant material into the country can get you (from memory so don't quote me) up to a $200,000 fine and/or six months in prison. Thanks heaps...

I have just checked out the rules for importing tobacco. Yes, I can do it. But I would have to pay excise duty of NZ$629.99 per kg of tobacco. That would be NZ$31.50 for a 50 gram tin. Plus 15% Goods and Services tax on top of that.

I expect there will be duty, and I am investigating ... several people have recommended 4noggins for mail order, and 4noggins Weybridge is a blend I especially want to try.

Ashton Consummate Gentleman or Comoy English Blend? (And other questions.)

ERRATUM: I have checked the implementation guidelines, and a retailer may still use spoken words to convey prices. The shop assistant was erring on the side of caution - and who can blame her? But, "Any other information about tobacco products, unless explicitly allowed by the Act or...

I plan to grow my own, but they will probably try to ban that next.

That is an option I am really going to have to investigate to keep me stocked until my first crop is ready.

Tobacco Products Are Now Forbidden From Being Displayed In Shops In New Zealand

This is how bad things have got in my country. A new law came into effect yesterday forbidding tobacco products from being displayed in shops. All cigarettes, cigars and tobacco must now be locked in cabinets. I went into the best shop in town for pipes and accessories during my visit to the...
