    Unexplained Marks

These are pictures of my pipe, a La Rocca "Como." You see how blemishes have developed on the bowl. They are not from abrasion, scratching, or dropping. Does anyone know what this is? Thanks...

    Penzance on ebay

Way too much. I just got some 2oz tins on 4noggins the other day, and as the smoking dragon said, you can get an 8oz bag for $30. The tins were $10 apiece.

How far down do you smoke?

I've been smoking Fribourg & Treyer's Golden Mixture, which is not an aromatic. I generally take an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes, with 5 or 6 relights, to smoke a bowl. I have to smoke outside though and it can be breezy. I find myself puffing faster to try and make sure I'm still lit.

How far down do you smoke?

I find that by the end of a smoke, the small bit of tobacco left in the bottom is too wet to keep lit. Does anyone have advice?

Thanks so much for the notification! I snagged some! Been after it for over a year now!

    Irish Flake

Irish Flake burns wonderfully cool and once you get it lit, it'll stay that way for a long time. It's a very slow smoke though. My pipe takes about one and a half flakes to fill, and I've gone an hour and a half of steady smoking before only to find the pipe only half done!

    Wierd looking pipe!

You run into those hurricane pipes every once in a while if you surf Ebay listings. A great idea for people like me who live near the water and can only smoke outside! Interestingly enough, Fribourg & Treyer are the makers of "Golden Mixture," which Bertrand Russell self-professedly smoked...

    Captain Black (White)

Since I've heard a lot of good about 1Q, I just checked it out at tobaccoreviews.com. Strangely, there are a large number of one-star ratings, despite its excellent reputation here amongst you distinguished pipe smokers. Perhaps because it's such a popular and well-known tobacco, it attracts a...

    Smoking to the bottom

Jimbo that's a really intelligent method. I've habitually shaken out my ashes before relighting, but I'll try your method.

    Tobacco Tins

I'm fairly new, and haven't worked all the way through any of my tins yet, but the instant I saw my first tin (it was Peterson Irish Flake) start to empty, I knew what empty tins were made for. Gifts for kids! Did anyone ever have Dad bring back some precious trinket from a trip to far away in a...

    Smoking to the bottom

Hi Dave, I've been dealing with the same issue myself. It's almost definitely too-wet tobacco. To fix this, do two things. First, make sure you're not letting saliva get into the stem as you smoke. A good way to do this is to keep from touching the bit with your tongue. Second--if it's not a...

How Old When You Smoked Your First Pipe?

Great story baskerville! I smoked my first pipe at 18. I had had a hankering for it for a few years, but my mother would never allow it around the house, and I had no desire to smoke like a fugitive. Goes against the spirit of smoking a pipe in the first place. So it was when I'd just left home...

    Peterson Tobacco

I've only tried Irish Flake from the Peterson line. I agree with chuckw on the tin note: raisins. I'd add damp, earthy tobacco as well--takes a few strong sniffs to tease out the much more subtle raisin from the tin. As everyone that's tried it says, this is very strong tobacco! I've twice...

    Need Help ID'ing Pipe (Picture)

Oh, and I haven't smoked them yet. I'm waiting on that until I see my brother again. One is for him, and it will be his first pipe, and I want to break them in together to show him how to do it. If they're not briar, though, I'll be looking for another pipe to give him for his first :(.

    Need Help ID'ing Pipe (Picture)

Hi guys, thanks for the replies! I bought them on eBay, where the very highly-rated seller said that they came from an older collection by a gentleman who had been planning to open a pipe shop but never did. And yes, I got them pretty cheap. I definitely don't mind a drug-store smoker. Do you...

    Need Help ID'ing Pipe (Picture)

Hi, I've recently bought two pipes. They bear the name "CZECH," stamped in all capital letters, about halfway across the stem. Try as I may, I have not been able to find the manufacturer online. Do these pipes look familiar to anyone? Does anyone know of the "CZECH" line? Thanks!

    Need Help: Czech Pipes

Hi, I've been smoking a pipe for about two and a half years now--the same one, a small, bent Dr. Grabow I purchased in a shop in Newport, RI--and have recently purchased two new ones on eBay. They bear the name "CZECH," stamped in all capital letters, about halfway across the stem. Try as I may...
