Ok I'll jump into the fray. What I usually tell the un experienced pipers is to find an estate(used) Costello They all pretty much smoke well. Packing tips for a new guy....
I learned this from Steve Brooks at the Chicago show. First shake (dribble) enough tobacco to just fill your bowl. Then make a plug of tobacco and stuff it in your bowl. the draw should be light.I've tried the other methods and would invariably regress into packing to tight. This method has...- coldfront

Bowl cleaning and buffing?
1725 is not too high. I think mine is 1700. Most grinders are higher. 1600 is ideal.thats what the woodworkers use. jim- coldfront

To all you folks thinkin about using an old bench grinder the RPMs are critical. You should not get too much over 1600 RPMs or you will get much too hot. I second the notion of a wheel for each compound. just my 2 cents. jim- coldfront
