    Thoughts

H&H El Nino has become almost an obsession for me. It is non-aromatic, but is otherwise difficult to categorize. It tastes a bit like a mild Balkan, and is a lovely introduction to that particular flavor genre. Frog Morton On the Bayou is another very nice blend on the slightly milder side...

    Lord Baltimore

You might like John Bull Royal English. Mild, well-balanced and very affordable. It comes in a pouch from Pipes & Cigars. My brother gave me a sample, and it has been in my rotation for some time now. It is a welcome diversion from my normal Balkans and VaPers.

    Escudo

PS Luxury Navy Flake is slightly milder than Escudo and available in bulk.

    Making Your Own Stems.

I'm drooling over your lathes. A good one is very useful in drilling and preliminary sizing of a stem. After that, there is very little "round" about a stem. Files, a belt sander, maybe a Dremel are much more useful for shaping.

Diameter of the Shank or Stem.

A stem must be hand fitted to the shank. The clearance at the mortise/tenon joint is extremely critical. Steve Norse at Vermont Freehand does excellent work as do Tim West and Mark Tinsky. I am sure that there are several others as well.

    Making Your Own Stems.

As an alternative to hand-turning tenons, you can use drilled (hollowed) derlin rods (I use 5/16"). The trick is to find a drill bit that gives you a tight mortise. Not all 5/16" bits are the same - at all.

    What Tobacco to Choose?

When I think of "spicy", Orientals and heavy doses of Perique come to mind. Are those what you meant?

Battle of the Balkans aka. Latakia

I have not tried Apertif, but London Mixture is almost always my first bowl of the morning. I don't find it "Latakia-forward" at all. If anything is forward, it is spicy Orientals, but to my palate, it is very well balanced.

Things I Will Do When Dunhill Tobaccos End

The only Dunhill in my rotation at this point in time is London Mixture. It is normally my first bowl of the morning, accompanying my first two cups of coffee. When it is no longer available, I will diligently search for a replacement. I have sampled a couple of the McLelland Oriental blends...

    Burley, Latakia, Cavendish, etc.

Skillfully blended, it is delicious stuff. Sadly, the Syrian variety is likely to soon be a thing of the past.

Multiple Tobacco Choices Or Stick To One?

Ditto. I normally have a Balkan, an Oriental-forward English, a VaPer, a lat-bomb and one or two that defy categorization in daily rotation. Some stay in rotation for quite a while, while others pass through rather quickly. Variety is the spice of life, and there are hundreds of blends to try...

    Burley, Latakia, Cavendish, etc.

The same could be said of several others... Latakia and Dark-fired Kentucky come to mind.

Mark Tinsky at amsmoke.com will try to accommodate your design parameters, and does sell premium blocks. Be aware that there could be flaws in any block regardless of grade. They are simply the nature of the beast. There are no guarantees.
