El Morjane Algerian Briar Pipe Score

My first briar was an El Morjane. I ended up getting a few more. I haven't smoked any of them in a while, but they always smoked good. I should dust them off.

About The Sherlock Holmes Heritage Pipes

I don't mind the Heritage finish. I'm not a grain connoisseur. I prefer a smooth finish, but the quality of the grain is not a consideration. More important to me is the overall appearance. The shape, proportions, and fittings are what I look at. If the winning pipe is in Heritage, ok. If it's a...

Looking For Pipe Shops in Michigan

There's Maison Edwards in Ann Arbor. Not a very big shop, but a cool atmosphere. I was only there once, 6-7 years ago, so I can't remember much about the selection. We're going to a game next month, so I plan on stopping by if time allows. We tried to stop at Paul's on the way to visit a friend...

    Peterson Irish Army

I've got five: 101, 86, 120, 406, and 408. The 406 Prince looks great, but mine smokes hot, so it doesn't get much love. The other four are all fantastic. Easily some of my favorite pipes.

Savinelli Filter Adapter in a Cob

I use the 6mm adapters in my cobs. It's quite often a snug fit, and a couple of times I had to lube them up with mineral oil to get them all the way in, but they work. I actually prefer the open draw without them, but the soft plastic the stems are made of can deform pretty easily when exposed...

    What Was your First Pipe?

This Legend. I've had it 11 years.

I Think I Ghosted My Mouth

I ghosted my mouth the first time I tried Ennerdale (the pipe, too). I don't recall doing anything special to get rid of it. I think I just smoked it out. It only happened that one time.

    Differentiating Vulcanite from Acrylic?

Shine a black light on it. Acrylic won't look any different; vulcanite (even a shiny black stem with no oxidation) will look brown. UV light is supposed to promote oxidation on vulcanite stems, but that's long-term exposure, i.e. leaving it sitting in the sun. A quick once over with a UV...

Whose Pipes do You Have the Most of?

Missouri Meerschaum, Morgan Bones, and Peterson. I don't have a count on the cobs or the Morgans, but I have 23 Petes.

    Peterson Pub Pipes?

I had no interest in them until a few weeks ago. I had no desire for something that big. But for whatever reason, they got stuck in my head and I had to have one. It got here on Tuesday, and I've been breaking it in all week. I went with the rusticated. I'm not a fan of rustication in general...

Peterson Pipe Book Now Available in Paperback

I've only skimmed through it so far, so I can't say much about it. There are a lot of ads for different tobacco companies, authorized K&P retailers, etc. Testimonials from happy customers, apologies from retailers selling imitations as the real thing, instructions on how to get the most out of...

Peterson Pipe Book Now Available in Paperback

Just got my copies of both today. I was really happy to see the big book back in print. I put off buying a copy the first time around, and by the time I decided to take the plunge, it was sold out everywhere. My favorite aspect of the catalog so far is that the pipes are pictured actual size.

    Your Favorite Peterson Sherlock Holmes

Baker Street, Deerstalker, Squire, and Baskerville, in that order. Those are the only ones I've got so far.

    Typical Pipe Smoking Attire

Normally I just wear whatever I'm wearing, but I do have a cardigan that I wear for my after work wind-down.

A Few Questions Regarding Clay Pipes and Cleaning Them

Putting it in the fire is the best way. A blow torch will work, but you have to be careful to heat the pipe evenly, or it could crack. With the grill, it's set it and forget it. Wrapping it in foil isn't necessary. I've also done half-cleaning, where I put it in the toaster oven. It doesn't get...

    Smoking Pipes Christmas card

The last couple of years, that's the first Christmas card I get.
