Anyone Here a Fan of Solent Mixture?

Solent is in my top 5 blends. It is certainly an English blend. I would describe it as a mix of a mild English blend with some Navy flake, it has this nice rum or honey sweet note in the background.

Still smoking too hot after all this time - advice requested

What I find works for me is to not only draw smoke thru the pipe, but pull in some fresh air at the same time by not having your lips sealed on the bit. This is harder to do with p-lips, works best with fishtails. I find I get more flavor, and zero burn, if I pull in some air on most puffs. I...

    Another P & C sale

To me, White Knight is a very oriental-forward blend, but with enough latakia and Virginias to take the zingy edge off of the orientals. I am a Virginia and Latakia fan, don't like many orientals, but I do like this one.

    Orlik Golden Sliced Review

I decided to smoke nothing but similar Virginias for a week, and Golden Slices came in third place out of the three. I tested Erinmore Flake, McClelland 2010 Classic Virginia, and the Orlik Golden Slices. I certainly don't think the Golden Slices was bad, it is a good solid tobacco. But based...

    Started Using Softie Bits

Use them on all my pipes. I put them on "backwards" with the lip towards the bowl, and then I don't cover the stem's button at all with the softie. Makes for a very natural clench. Now I just wish pipemakers would all use non-oxidizing stems, since I don't need any softness in the stem...

Passed the NYS Bar Exam, Now What Pipe Do I Get?

Welcome to the profession as well. If you're like the majority of us lawyers and won't be working at a big firm with the associated big paycheck, something more modest than an S. Bang might be in order. Whatever you get, make the first bowl some Orlik Golden Slices. Since it is "Smoked by all...

    Nightcap revisited

Not a fan when I tried it months ago. Have come to realize that any baccy described as either "spicy" or containing anything except a trace of perique is not for my palate. However, I may crack open that mason jar once it has 6 months extra age on it, and see if it (or my palate) have changed.

    Scottish independence and pipe tobacco

To export anything to the United States, an independent Scotland would have to very quickly establish a Customs relationship with the United States, negotiating the levies on every import and export that goes each way. In the short term, this will likely lead to a stoppage or big slow-down in...

    Your Favorite Baccy Label?

Another favorite, Devil's Holiday. I nice bowl of this even makes the Devil smile. Not a big fan of labels with just text on them, or labels where blenders use the same colors and fonts for different blends and you have to stop and read the text (like the Wessex Brigades). With the ease of...

    Your Favorite Baccy Label?

I know we're really after the contents, but some labels really rise above the rest. What is your favorite label? Mine is Old Georgetown Tobacco's own Shenandoah blend. Indian girl half-clothed in tobacco, in a field of tobacco, that works for me. Old Georgetown has some great labels on their...

    Mason jar storage tips ?

Based on other folk's excellent storage tips, I started using the Ball Platinum jars, in their original boxes. They fit perfectly in an old file cabinet. In addition, I printed labels for the top of the jars using images from the manufacturers, with a little text box reminding me of the contents.

    Smoking in Washington, DC

Local here. Light up wherever you want, no outdoor smoking ban in DC unless it is specifically labelled. The Mall and around all the monuments are all great to smoke and contemplate the views. You'll find a few small "courtyard" gardens/patios immediately next to some of the Smithsonian...

Confessions of a Once Latakia Phobic.

So you got me thinking. I like Latakia heavy blends, but always avoid the peaty islands Scotch and go for a nice highland Scotch. Maybe it is time I gave the smokey peat Scotch's another chance.
