Would you advise your children to smoke a pipe?

In theory, yes I would. I consider pipes (not inhaled) a luxury, a sensory experience, but not a vice. I want my son to experience the joys and beauties of this human life, in moderation and without harming others of course. That said, the reason I was planning on waiting till he went off to...

Help me choose a gift for my BIL

Thank you all for your valuable input. I've decided to either buy him a few tins and the Chacom: http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/Chacom/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=148377 with a wind screen to increase his success out of doors. Or, to skip the whole idea (see warren's post) as misguided. I...

Help me choose a gift for my BIL

I'm sorry for the abbreviation. I only did it to save space since it was in the topic title. Yes, Brother In Law. You're completely right, Warren, Christmas gift, not birthday, but I admit that my motivation is to potentially inspire him to try it. It might end up being bonding time/topic for us...

Help me choose a gift for my BIL

I know that picking a pipe for someone else is risky, but even if he ends up mostly displaying it (and being tempted to smoke it!) then it will be a great gift. It will be a project for him to learn to smoke it and fun research for him to buy and test tobaccos...I just know that he'd enjoy the...

Help me choose a gift for my BIL

I'd love to get some input before I choose for him. Any reasons or details would be much appreciated. This will be his first (only) pipe. He is an occasional cigar guy. This will be for outdoor around the fire with friends and family, and away on business trips only. Special occasions and trying...

What was grandpa/professor smoking 30 years ago...

That would be nice, didimauw. I'll bet it would put a smile on his face. Sail Green, another one I've never heard of before.

    Truly Breathtaking

Fall in New England. Fall in the Midwest. Truly the best of 'thin places' especially at this time of year. Enjoy!

What was grandpa/professor smoking 30 years ago...

American university, jpmcwjr. Not an enjoyer of cigars, newbroom. The pipes of my youth smelled nothing like cigar smoke (of course, to be fair, I'm sure that the cigars I smelled back then were terrible cheap ones).

What was grandpa/professor smoking 30 years ago...

Great stories and anecdotes all around. Plus quite a few old blends that I had forgotten (or in the case of Flying Dutchman and Walnut, never heard of before). Our scent memories are so strong and powerful. In addition, there's something about smoke and wood that just comforts the mind and feeds...

What was grandpa/professor smoking 30 years ago...

Wow, look at that place. It would be worth a trip for certain. Thank you for the suggestion. "old codger" is funny. Pappymac, I imagined as much, but I wasn't sure which of these old brands smelled "nice". I know the pipes of my past smelled nothing whatsoever like cigarettes nor cigars. I had...

What was grandpa/professor smoking 30 years ago...

that smelled so nice? The pipe smoke I smelled as a youth smelled great to me. Various professors, granddads, New England papas. They obviously didn't have the mega variety in tins we see today...but it smelled great nonetheless! What were they likely smoking? Half and Half? Cherry-laced...
