A Question About Cleaning Pressed Meerschaum

I've heard horror stories about meers and freezing weather, but I think those involved smoking them outside. Regardless, due to the cracks this pipe has, I'm going to avoid freezing it. I will accomplish this goal by not freezing it.

A Question About Cleaning Pressed Meerschaum

Oh, it's a cheap pipe alright. I'm not looking to do anything beyond household remedies; no special treatments. I plan on thoroughly putting this pipe through its paces.

A Question About Cleaning Pressed Meerschaum

I received a few antique-shop pipes from my mother-in-law this Easter. One of them is a pressed meerschaum pipe about which I decided "dammit, I'm going to smoke it anyway." It seems like it will absorb moisture well. It has a few superficial cracks on the exterior, but I don't really care...

I think I'm Doing This Backward, Or Possiblly Upside-Down

Cortez => I hadn't even considered the actual physics of one-dimensional tobacco. We might have to consult The Doctor.

I think I'm Doing This Backward, Or Possiblly Upside-Down

I'm certainly not meaning any part of my initial post to be insulting to the blends mentioned therein; poor choice of words. I'm obviously going to have to check my assessment of those OTC's (and I think I'll start doing that with a bowl full of Prince Albert in a few minutes). What I suppose...

I think I'm Doing This Backward, Or Possiblly Upside-Down

I got into pipe smoking, around seven or eight years ago, through my brother. The first tobaccos he threw at me were tins of Samuel Gawith's Brown Flake and Penzance. I had no clue. I burned right through those tins without even an idea of the sorts of flavors I was expecting to find. After...

    Strange cracks in my shank...

This is my attempt at getting pictures up. I hope this works. If my post goes as planned, the darker lines on the shank are the concern. I have contacted the retailer, and I will hesitate before purchasing a pipe from them again. They offered nothing but to remind me that they do not accept...

    Strange cracks in my shank...

I'll post pictures as soon as I can. The inside of the bowl is tapered. I'm starting to suspect that the cracks were pre-existing and probably hidden by the finish. Is this something to which I can apply a fix? Right now, the cracks are hairline and the pipe is airtight.

    Strange cracks in my shank...

Thanks! I have tried to keep careful watch on this pipe's temperature. You're probably on the right track about letting it rest. I've been real eager to get the heel broken in and have been smoking this pipe often. It's strange that it would be the shank, though. The bowl does like to get...

    Strange cracks in my shank...

I purchased a GBD Bermuda bent Dublin, in pebble grain, recently. It is only a month old and starting to develop cracks midway down the shank: one running with the shank and another perpendicular to it on the top of the shank near the bowl. The crack running with the shank does not seem to be...

I have had the pleasure of registering for this forum on my phone. Please enjoy the pictures. I have been smoking pipes for a little over seven years and have been stopping here to lurk for nearly as long. Hello. I mostly smoke in my car, clench all my pipes, and have chewed through many...
