I have cleaned many NOS Petes before smoking them. The most likely culprit -- and the source that many folks never consider -- is the draft hole. I use a combination of smooth and bristled tapered pipe cleaners soaked in Everclear to clean that area. As step one, take one of the smooth... -

As a Peterson collector, I have quite a few Petes, but I've chosen these three to "show off." :wink: This one is the anchor of my collection -- a 1904 Patent, in pristine condition... Peterson Mark Twain Pipe
Oh, and before I forget, take a look at the following chart and see if the "hallmark" that is the farthest to the right of the three hallmarks stamped onto the silver band matches up with anything from the early 80's. ;-) -

peckinpahhombre -- Your Mark Twain likely dates to circa 1983-84. Peterson was using that particular packaging for the Mark Twain at that time. Very nice pipe! Here's an example from 1984:
