We broadcast weekly, every Tuesday at 8 pm eastern USA time and are available on nearly all podcast sites and apps. Listen on your computer, tablet, phone and even in the car! Our Featured Interview tonight is with Premal Chheda. Premal is a pipe maker and the owner of Smoker’s Haven, a historied retail tobacconist in Columbus, Ohio. The store was originally founded in 1940. Premal’s father was the third owner before he turned the business over to his son. Smoker’s Haven also has their own very popular line of tobaccos made for them by J. F. Germain & Son. In "Pipe Parts", we will continue our summer series on the history of tobacco. Sit back, relax with your pipe, and enjoy The Pipes Magazine Radio Show!

Premal Chheda, Pipe Maker & Owner of Smoker’s Haven in Columbus Ohio
Hi Brian,
No sympathy here on the setup the kids at college trip as I have done it twice (three times if you consider an advanced degree for one). You will enjoy the empty nest.
Premal Chheda is a gentleman long established in our hobby. Both the Smokers Havens blends and the Chedda pipes are great. It is nice to see Premal working with the new upcoming pipe makers. I have one of his collaboration pipes that always smokes great. HE also sells some great estates.
Music – William Walton’s piece “Crown Imperial March” was interesting. It almost felt like it belonged in “Star Wars”. I know I heard it somewhere previously.
Rant – I also hate new computer. It is such a pita.
Good show Brian. See you in Columbus.
The Pipe Parts history lesson continues to be really good stuff.
I just think the world of Premal. He is just a class act. Last year at the NASPC show he took what must have been 30 people out to dinner on Friday night. That cost a pretty penny. From the restaurant we walked down to a really good ice cream place. Believe it or not he actually had to suggest to someone that they buy him an ice cream cone.
Premal didn’t mention it in the interview but he is two time winner of the GKCPC Pipe Carving Contest. I believe his winning entries were in the Bulldog contest and then in the Dublin contest. He didn’t enter last year but we look forward to his return this year.
The blends Premal has made for him by Germain are excellent. Exotique is one of the best Balkan-y blends around.
The music wasn’t bad. It made you think that John Williams was heavily influenced by William Walton.
Moving large amounts of data from one machine to the other is a real pain. The hard part is that you don’t realize how much crap you have nor where it is all stashed. In a dream world you would just create a ghost image of the old computer and then restore it the new machine. The problem is that usually the old computer has a different operating system than the new one.
Send all your files to the almighty CLOUD. What could happen? Ashley Madison, IRS, US State Department, Target, etc. Any mention of Syrian Latakia could raise flags with ISIS hackers.
And yet we give all our files to somebody we never met to copy, which is why is takes so long. So many people have the same need and yet so few Geek Squaders. You would think they would figure out that the easier a transfer is to a new computer, the more likely people are to purchase a newer computer.
Great show. Interesting hearing from Premal, I didn’t realize how old and storied Smokers Haven was.
I surprised and interested to hear Germain is blending for Smokers Haven, makes me take their blends very seriously. Also was interested to hear a little information and why production is so scarce from that company, since folks wil sell organs to get a few ounces.
I’d like to recommend a little Chuck Mangione for music sometime. Thanks again as always!
A great set of shows Brian, I fell behind over the summer but have caught up with the last 7 weeks now.
I had the pleasure of meeting Premal at the Chicago show this year although I had no idea who he was at the time! I was wandering around lost on the Thursday afternoon and accidentally stumbled into the Smokers Haven room (next to the golf supply shop) Premal greeted me very warmly we chatted a little and I came out with a Smokers Haven cloth bag and a bowl full of a sample blend. A fantastic way to kick off the show.
Music, I like a good imperial march but you need to get some bagpipes going to really scare everyone away.
Rant, switching computers is never fun, it’s amazing how fast the junk files accumulate. If I didn’t need one id just stick to my phone.
Happy trails and all that good stuff.
