Found this old ad and it looks like Walgreen's had a great selection of pipe tobaccos.
I never knew that Dunhill baccy had such good distribution as to be available at a drugstore.
By this time, both BS and Escudo were Gallaher products, interesting that the 759 was .14¢ more than the Original.
Golden Extra was $1.21 for 4oz.

Escudo 1 3/4 oz was .99¢

Troy, very cool, it seems "drug store tobacco" was a different thing back in the day!

It just goes to show how nostalgic we can become for blends that were,in their time, perfectly every-day.
Not a pipe or a baccy on offer in Walgreen today.

Wow.
I was a sophomore in high school in December of 1972 and two years away from buying my first pipe.
To all you newbs out there. Start buying tobacco as expeditiously as possible.
Purchase quality leaf and protect it in Mason/Ball/Kerr jars stored in a dark and cool environment.
Send me a thank you note in thirty years and I'll either smile wisely or I'll poke the envelope with my cane thinking it's a new six pack of Hane's tee shirts from Wal-Mart.
Get busy.

Love the availability and the prices of these blends. . . but no way would I want a return to 1972! Vietnam on the nightly news, Watergate soon-to-come. . . no thanks.
Besides, I had just turned 11, and those next few years weren't pleasant for anyone! :)

To have a time machine, a big burlap sack, and about $200 in your pocket. No profiteering, just for personal consumption.

Good eye for catching that add misterlowercase. I was 2 years old then. It would be a while before I took to the pipe.

I turned 3 in August 1972. If you look at the price of the Escudo compared to today's price, I think with inflation it is cheaper today than it was then.

I was 9 in 1972 and had already attempted to smoke my first cigarette. Not a pleasant experience. If only I had tried a pipe, first......

If you wanted to buy that $7.70 Krisson pipe with today's money you have to bring over $40.00 back with you. Depends on how your time machine works, I suppose :)

Neat! I actually remember the Balkan Sobranie being available at Walgreens here in E. Tennessee as recently as the early 1990s. Hard to believe, but it was technically a "drugstore" blend back in the day….Of course, Walgreens had an entire aisle of pipes, pipe tobacco and cheap cigars….
