Well we made it to North Carolina minus 1 run away cat in Moab Utah. ( we have alerted the locals sadly he was not chipped).

Coming from dry dry dry North Idaho it’s been quite an adventure. I’d like to thank all the old hats around here that held my hand and cautioned me about tongue bite and the drying of tobacco VA especially as I did not realize what a huge difference it makes.

I’ve been experimenting with drying times as the humidity levels vary going through the south. We have visited some very humid places Louisiana being the most and as we have come north now in Raleigh NC.

Last night I rubbed out 2 full flakes of Solani ABF and was only able to smoke 1 bowl after say 20 minuets drying time. To my surprise and delight when I woke up this morning 9 hours later it was still at that near perfect moisture level a bit wet actually.

In Louisiana I think the AC kept the hotel room dry enough to dry tobaccos properly. What do y’all southerners do when the humidity is at levels that you can get your tobacco to that perfect crispiness ?

We plan on staying around here KY,LA,NC,TN,VA.
Just looking for the right house and a few acres to plant some baccy…

Welcome to Raleigh - from Raleigh! Here, I even leave a tin open outside sometimes to add moisture. In the warmer months it's 90 or 95 relative humidity almost every morning.

My wife is from Hawaii so it’s way to dry in Idaho, kids were gettin skin problems and my town was getting really weird politically so I was like let’s go South so we are looking for a place. Idaho house closes in a couple days. This is the last big move for sure though we’ve been galavanting around for too long…

Pipes By George on Hillsboro Street is probably the only real tobacconist around, if anyone knows better please chime in - cause I'd like to know too! It's a small shop, but he does end up having a few things that are hard to get sometimes (Esoterica on occasion, he usually pulls in some of the C&D short runs). When you get settled you'll have to make a weekend of going to Asheville - very nice, 4.5hrs?), and a run to the coast (less than 2 hrs to TopSail). This is a nice area for proximity to the mountains + the beach.

JR Cigar is in Smithfield - not much for pipers. Close to the Smithfield outlets, so it could be a decent lunch out / 'shop around a bit' kind of day. They have 2 tobacco pipes. Yep - TWO! So they do have a selection. They have a small selection of tobacco, probably 10 or 12, I remember a few decent Mac Barens like Symphony, Roll Cake, etc, Erinmore, more value oriented stuff in big bags. But an excellent humidor if you like cigars.

I live in Sarasota Florida which is about 1 mile south of Tampa. When I am not being lazy I will pull out a few flakes of one of my Samuel Gawith flakes like St James and I let it sit 2-3 hours and then it is ready. I keep my house at 74 and have a whole house de humidifier but it still takes lots of time. I only smoke indoors so once I am lit, I don't have to deal with any excess humidity.

Your drying time will vary!

One reason I am not a fan of some one seemingly knowledgeable will post "A half an hour in a dish makes it perfect,"- and for him in his environment, it will be great. But chances are that others have different tobacco, different humidity levels at home and outside, different preferences for the level, and starting moisture in the tin or bag.
