There, I said it!

Yes, thems fightin words!
Recently was gifted a tin by a generous forum member and friend who prefers to remain nameless. I was welcomed aboard with hints of rum and a bee propolis smell. I let air dry a bit and loaded her up. Tastes so similar to bee propolis to me that I really can't get past it. I will finish the tin to see if things change but I'm on to my third bowl and my thoughts haven't been swayed yet.
I guess I like my Latakia to be high quality and not need to be hidden behind any over the top flavorings! :nana:

I'll walk the plank now. Thanks for the small tour of your ship. My Balkan Beauty is waiting to pick me up and take me to sweeter seas!

Congrats, you bombed my decoy vessel and blew your frigate up in the process! Time to rebuild stronger!

Balkan Beauty is okay too. Tastes a bit too much like Balkan Supreme to me. Heavy handed lat blends always put me off because the smokiness overshadows the rest of the blend. Then again, I started smoking Latakia blends over twenty-five years ago, and think I have lost interest in lat forward blends.

The Basma in Balkan beauty sets it apart to my tastes. I consider lat forward blends to be like ... What's the C&D one with 70%? That tastes salty to me almost! That is the great thing about this, everyone should be able to find blends they like since we are still in a time when there are more blends available than ever before!

Latakia and Dark Fired may work best as condiments. A well-distributed pinch of Latakia can give a blend a hint of richness that is lovely and may have more of a Latakia effect -- since the taste is both distinct and harmonized with the rest -- than a Lat-bomb. $0.02, worth a lot less in this economy.

I don't get the follow-on Balkan Beauty reference. Not liking any given blend, understandable. What does Balkan Beauty have to do with Black Frigate? Nothing obviously. One could like both, or not. Navy/Rum blends are not for everyone. You should be forced to serve seven years below the mast as the Captain's cabin-boy for this "review." Balkan Beauty is good stuff, similar to FMOTT but both lack "Navy Cavendish (Virginias soaked and aged in Rum) to produce a true Royal Navy blend." Bee propolis, my arse. Freaking landlubbers.

I've never tried BF but the oversized and animated signatures of the fanboi's are very annoying.
Agreed. Black Frigate is a nice blend as are many others, but the way it has been blown out of proportion with everyone making a show of "getting aboard" and trying to outdo each other with pictures of boats and things now has gotten a bit ridiculous. People, get a life, or maybe this is it? It was in good taste and maybe even amusing originally when Duane started it, but I mean now, really?
As to blends, the whole idea of smoking pipe is in the cultivation of taste for the subtleties and complexities that pipe tobacco can have; when someone tells me that they stuff three pounds of perique or latakia into their pipe and it still isn't quite working for them or can't catch a buzz with 50% nicotine content, I realize that this is a course person who has really taken up the wrong hobby for sure.
