Would you Rather? (Tobacco Cellaring)

Would you rather buy 4- 2oz tins to cellar or buy an 8oz tin then divide up and cellar in jars in order to save $10. Im on the fence. I know the jars don’t quite cost $10 but then there is the time and resale if you do end up selling down the road (not really my plan but you never know.) I’m interested in hearing everyone’s opinion.

Smallet tins are better for resale. If you're not planning to resell, I would buy in bulk. Mylar is lighter and doesn't take up as much space as jars. Worth looking up.

I bought and divided up 8 or 16oz packaging when available to split it up in 2oz jars. My only exceptions being 100g tins of 140th and 8oz tins of blockade runner. The blockade runner I just ran out of jars and didn’t feel like getting more so they sit as is.

My main driver was I didn’t want to open 8oz 10 years from now, I’d prefer to just open 2oz at a time.

I’ll admit I know nothing about Mylar. My jars are really stacking up so I’m definitely interested. Is there anything to watch for when buying bags? To you need to heat seal them?

That’s why I’m considering Mylar bags just big enough to hold 2 oz. Can’t see putting something up to age and then having to open it just to get some out then reseal.

If I know I love the blend, I'm definitely in the bulk and jar camp.

If I don't know whether I'll like the blend, I buy one 2 oz. tin to try it.

In neither situation would I buy 4 2 oz. tins (if there is a bulk option).

I transfered all of my bulk that I had in pint and quart jars to mylar. Wallaby has good options. I got the 1 cup and pint with resealable ziploc styl closure. These are also heat sealable. For long term storage you'll want to seal them with a clothing iron which is super easy. Thickness is important and the Walkaby is 5 to 5.5 mil on each side.

I use this brand and they have held up well. I use my wife's clothes iron to seal them up.

I’m 5 years in and I wish I had less jars and more tins. I’m going through oral surgery and haven’t been smoking much so I might be an outlier but the jars are a hassle for me. If I had more space perhaps but as it is I’d prefer tins, especially if I stop smoking one day and want to recoup some cost. I didn’t purchase to sell but life happens. I went overboard I’m afraid and if I had any advice it would be not to buy too much.

I've used a vacuum sealer for tobacco I was sending to a friend overseas, but I've never personally kept tobacco long term in this way, so I can comment on how it keeps tobacco relative to jars.

I like 2oz tins. They're the perfect size really, about a week or 2 if smokes if it's something I really like. But I do buy many 8oz or 100g tins just to save money. Usually with the big tins, I cellar those for the long term and will divide them into jars once opened in the future. The 2oz tins are what get opened whenever I want to bring a blend into my rotation.
It just makes more sense to buy the big tins, from a financial aspect.

You won't near get as much for 4-2 Oz tins as you will for the original 8 Oz tin sealed with tobacco in it.

I am in the same situation. I have a lot of bulk and a lot of jars. I have considered switching to mylar for a while but haven't pulled the trigger yet.
There seems to be a lot of different options out there. Heat sealing for long term storage seems to be the best idea.
One of my main concerns about mylar is the development of small pin sized holes. I am not sure how you could detect them before it is too late. With jars the risk of losing a seal is also a reality, however in my experience I believe that to be a rare occurrence.
