Hello folks --- a number of my pipes are getting VERY - I mean, VERY - difficult to remove the stem from the shank. In fact, there's been one casualty from my trying. Well, hopefully not a real CASUALTY ... but it will need to visit the Pipe Hospital for sure. Why is this happening, an what should I do to prevent it? I'm thinking that PERHAPS (but I'm not at all sure) that this might be due to the winter (indoor) heaters causing the pipes to dry-out and shrinking around the top of the shank. it's particularly bad on pipes that have a bone transition from shank to stem.

In general, should pipes be stored with their stems in our out of the shank?

thanks in advance for your guidancen ---- Mike W G

Gently remove the stems and give them a good scribble on the tenon with a soft pencil. That should provide lubrication to prevent damage. As for storage . I always leave my stems in place.

Great Tip Arthur!

That makes a lot of sense with the graphite and all.

But what do you expect from Wisconsin brethren. :D

Try popping the pipes you are having a hard time breaking down in the freezer for a few minutes, the plastic contracts at a different rate then the briar, et voila. I've heard that beeswax (really, is there anything it can't do?) will help with the fit, be it too tight or too loose, or as Unclearthur stated, graphite dust.
