So I finally bit the bullet and purchased this pipe from Viking Pipe Club, and I have heard that pots are really good for smoking flakes. Since I have never smoked a flake tobacco before, I felt I should register on the forum and get some suggestions. I have been smoking on and off for quite a while and can control and enjoy most cut tobacco, but have never tried flakes, coins, or rope. I tend to like milder non-aromatics, the spiciness that some perique containing blends have don't really strike my fancy at this time. Any suggestions?

Welcome aboard!

That's a beautiful pipe you have there!

Just going off your taste description, here are some mild/medium flakes and coins that I smoke that you may enjoy as well.
Orlik Golden Sliced

Mac Baren Navy Flake

Mac Baren Virginia Flake

Capstan Blue Flake

Mac Baren Roll Cake

McClelland Navy Cavendish Flake
Also, if you want to try a couple of Va/Pers that are a little more sweet than spicy, give these a try.
Peter Stokkebye Luxury Bullseye Flake

Dunhill Deluxe Navy Rolls
For some mild, slightly aromatic flakes, that still maintain a good base of Va, give these a try.
Mac Baren Mixture Flake

Mac Baren Vanilla Cream Flake

Peter Stokkebye Luxury Twist Flake
Good luck, and enjoy!

Dan

Great looking Wilmer, I am sure it is a very cool smoking pipe. I would grab a tin of Dunhill Flake or Capstan Blue Flake as those are both readily available and very nice sweet tasting flakes.

Thanks, all!
I have ordered a small selection of flakes, and a coin and will report back on how it goes. I am thinking of trying the cube cut method of preparing a flake to smoke, since I don't have any experience otherwise I don't think that I can be disappointed!

I probably should add that this pipe nearly doubles the monetary investment I have in pipes. I have a Billiard Butz-Choquin supermate that I bought in Boston when first starting out. Nice pipe although it does tend to smoke a little hot in the bowl. I have 2 pipes inherited from my grandfather and great grandfather a Cellini Original bent Rhodesian that is a superb smoker, and an Old England (Saseini second) straight bulldog that needs a good cleaning as it is as sour as the year is long. The remaining pipes are BC ebay purchases for very little money and include a really wonderful Simoun bent billiard that is the best smoker of all. Very excited to try this new pipe, and hope I enjoy it as much as I think I will, as it may very well be the nicest 'grade' pipe I'll ever buy!

Beautiful pipe. You did well with that one. as for flakes, there are many different methods not the least of which are, fold & stuff, fold, twist and stuff, rubbing out and cutting into cubes, as you mentioned. Experiment with all of them and you'll find different behaviors of the blends and what suits you best. Good luck and enjoy.

Papipeguy- i plan on doing a lot of experimenting with this pipe and all kinds of tobacco! This is the first time I'll be doing something different since learning how to stuff a pipe!
