I bought this Zinc Statue at an antique store and it had a plaque on base stamped COPYRIGHT 1875 BY/ WM, DEMUTH & CO.,/ 501 BROADWAY NEW YORK just like this one at this auction on the link below. Im trying to find out details on it. I showed no history of him creating Native American pipe statues that looked like black people.

Demuth sold those all over the country. Buying from Morris Seelig’s foundry he pioneered the popularity of zinc statuary vs the wooden figures which preceded them. Eventually Demuth devoted whole catalogs to figures like yours.

The depth and breadth of his fancy goods stock made him a multimillionaire at a time when that meant something. He spent the last twenty years of his life toggling between palatial homes in Manhattan and Lake George, and a luxurious suite at The Breakers in Palm Beach.
