can anyone school me on these? Who smokes one?

Sounds like an interesting life according to the Pipedia entry. I have never heard of him or his pipes though.

This quote stood out for me though, "Unfortunately the calabash powder ruined his eyesight". Is there something specifically harmful about calabash dust in particular?

I thought it might have been the harvesting of meerschaum. I need to reread that entry as I may have misunderstood

I think any abrasive like dust can ruin eyes.
