It's tar seeping out into the plaster fill on the outside of the pipe. All of my cobs have it, no worries. It's how cobs color, like meerschaum pipes (although a bit less elegant).

my MM is a legend, and has a plastic ring around the end of the shenk. Does it need to be removed as well?

Radio, I've a few cobs that are pretty old and very well smoked, none of them seep like that, I think it's the difference between tobacco moisture when smoking.

You're probably right about the moisture Mike. I smoke aromatics almost exclusively, which are more moisture laden that most other tobaccos. My "seeped" cobs are real sweet smokers!

i have had cobs that did the same thing. do not worry about it, i smoke my tobac bone dry. the coloring did not effect the smoking quality of the my mm cob. i think it added alittle class to the pipe.
mike.
