Why would the mods lock a thread based on an annual tobacco release from an independent blender?

Probably for the same reason a dog licks it's own balls - because it can. The Mods here are very sensitive about any subject that can lead to an argument or flame war. That seems to work pretty well at keeping the site very friendly. They sometimes seem to error a bit too far on the side of caution but again, the site is kept quite friendly. Difficult to be too critical of the strategy.

I get the point made by beefeater33 but my take is different. I think the vast majority of the time the mods here actually use a very light touch. Many if not most of us have seen other pipe forums wither or literally implode due to incivility. The fact that it hasn't happened here is a continuing miracle and in no small measure due to a cautious approach to moderation.

That’s a very inapt comparison. This is a good forum. I don’t think moderating is as easy as it might seem. You can probably get a private explanation if you PM a mod.
I don't know I could be wrong about my history but weren't they know for having a light touch when dealing with contract law. And that's how they got people by getting the to agree to terms and conditions on websites that are frankly superfluous. Like how now that you agreed to the terms on this entertainment website we will occasionally close threads that violate the agreed upon terms.
Then again I could be confusing them with a small business that offers a free service and isn't a form of government.

We have a lot of people on this forum and we don't know all that much about them. Who's to say that some here have to deal with being bi-polar or have loved ones who have to deal with it. It may be a joke to some who have no direct experience with being bi-polar and may be the opposite for those who do have direct experience.
Not to mention who have lost people to the effects of bi-polar as well. You know when one of the symptoms is risk taking and disregard to personal safety it can certainly end in a very sad way. Certainly not something that would add appeal to something that's supposed to be relaxing and savored.

Oh you think you did but you didn't. The dog already got licks in.
That's why I never let dogs lick me. Their perfectly clean balls and the perfectly clean six-inch radius around them lets me know precisely where that tongue has been. If they want to greet me, they can shake my hand.

Of course, if it's a female dog, then it's an entirely different situation. But when a dog is charging at me, I've not the time for fine distinctions.

After reading the locked thread, I have to say I would have locked it down as well. It got way out hand and off track. The thread was about a tobacco review. Most posters would have discussed the tobacco and its components. Instead what we got was a lesson in why Americans can’t get along - there was a time when words - and in this case the name of the blend - told a story. When Ernie introduced the blend, I did not think about my younger sister or how she made my mother‘s life a sad challenge (ya, she’s bipolar-my sister that is). Instead I thought about the components and the fact that it is being released at Christmas time. It was so obvious - and full of irony and parady - that it was so made it humorous - at least considering it all came from a guy from Boston. If words trigger you - and you find yourself needing to let others know you are triggered or bothered by those words - then Lord help you when the shit really hits the fan. Yada, yada, yes this is America and yes you can speak up. But when you speak up and complain about being triggered by a word, or the name of a blend given by a guy who on his own website makes it clear he is not so nice - Boston nice that is, then don’t be surprised when others shit all over you. And they will. Because just like you, they can voice opinions back. Everyone has hurt feelings. Everyone carries wounds. It’s life. It doesn’t get any better. Eventually you die and your body is either burned, embalmed, or turned into a diamond and sold at a pawn shop.

Seems kinda Krazy to me..... almost Nazi like?.......
Beefeater.

As I'm sure you are aware, (as you've been a member here for 10 years now) that threads like this are against the rules.

I have to go through manually and delete all the garbage from that review thread. I feel bad for anyone finding that link and having to read through all of that.

But thank you for your concern.
