Another area I never delved into before is storage. I wish I had kept all the mason jars I thew away after my ex-wife left years ago...must have been 30-40. Never could figure why she left them behind. If you buy in bulk are the packages not enough to keep the tobacco fresh for a certain period of time? Why transfer to mason jars? Is this primarily for keeping for a year or more? Noob questions but if you don't ask you never know.

Speaking for myself, I use mason jars for either bulk tobacco or tins that I won't be smoking within a few weeks.

Quick clarification... I should have written "I use mason jars for bulks and open tins that I won't be finishing within a few weeks."

Walmart has nice glass jars with airtight seals, 10oz for $1.90 each. Holds exactly 3oz of tobacco, and you can easily get your hand in there. They also sell a couple sizes of ball mason jars real cheap.

Read this post from the forum and you will learn alot: Mason Jars and alternatives

Excellent read. It looks like I need to make a trip to one of the few places I really hate going, Wally World, but; a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. I've never had tobacco around in tins and am trying to fathom what 1.50z looks like. My mind tells me that's not enough to load up more than once or twice but since I did order some I'll soon find out.

Somebody check my math on this...
1.5 ounces is roughly equal to 42 grams.
A bowl of tobacco is roughly 3 grams
1.5 ounces of tobacco will yield approximately 14 bowls.

That sort of negates my mental conception of what 1.5 oz looked like. That's enough to get me nearly though the day.:)

It may seem a silly question but why not leave it in the tin that the tobacco comes in? Unless i break the seal is it not just as good as in a jar? I admit that a broken seal means it may need storing if it's not being used within a short time but does a screw tin not seal it?
We have inexpensive Kilner jars over here, they are glass jars with a glass lid with a seal and an external metal lever system that clips it securely air tight.

This is what Esoterica bags look like with a light shining from inside the bag to show how many holes are in the new bags:

I saw this on puff and thought weird. I posted there as well but in short, I did a little experiment, emptied my bag of Penzance, and yes it did have the areas where the light shined through. I poured water into the bag and no leaks. The areas where the light could be seen were actually places where the cream color wore off probably due to bending or whatever. There was no actual air breech. Now if you actually see a hole, that would be a different story but with mine, there were no places where the seal of the bag would have been broken. That being said, I did end up jarring the bag and having to smoke a bowl of the remnants :) G1

Any excuse to smoke Penzance is a valid reason in my book..... :puffy:

I too have not had any issues with dried out tobacco in the bags, but as expensive as it is getting, it doesn't make much sense to take a chance on it.

Sealed tins generally dont need to be transfered to storage, but some types seal in the moisture better than others. And if I order multiple new blends I normally can't help cracking them all open and smelling. How better to decide which one to smoke. I use the square walmart jars, they seal well, and look nice too.

I wasn't sure what Esoterica was and did a search only to find tobaccoreviews.com which, after reading 20 of the 300+ reviews, couldn't believe all the five star ratings...must try some.

Wondering about long term storage of my Esoterica bags too. I have noted the wear to the foil layer, but it looks like the plastic layer underneath is intact. Has anyone tried running the bag through a home vacuum sealer for food storage?
