I have been looking at some deals on estate pipes and there is shit. Years ago smoking pipes would have at least 100 plus of American pipes. Now you are lucky to see around 100 plus pipes from all the countries combined. I also went looking for high end pipes from guys like Kent Rasmussen, and many others. It seems like they are all done carving. I saw zero Todd Johnson pipes as well. Any idea what is going on.

I know everyone doesn't subscribe to my theory, but I've said it before and will stand by it; your witnessing the basic economic principles of supply and demand.

Over the past years, more especially over the past few, there has been an increase of pipe smokers, an increase of sales outlets, and a decrease in supply of estate pipes.

I suspect there are other factors involved, but those are the biggest. Just my .02

Was looking this morning and found several nice pipes being offered for $50 and less. For me the problem when starting out was finding the shapes I wanted. Having noticed the pipes on Mr. @JimInks threads, I have noticed that these experienced smokers have many shapes and sizes which leads me to consider other shapes I would not have otherwise considered.

There was just a thread on this last Friday, by the OP, with an answer from Sykes at SP, as pointed out by fireground - they are short handed in the restoration department.
I just looked. There are over 200 estate pipes available. Granted, only 50 of those are American. I think some people just like to bitch. puffy

As far as I know, the decrease is observed not only in estate, but also among the new pipes. One of the reasons that explains this phenomenon may be the reduction of mature Erica thickets.

We uncontrollably exterminated thickets in the last century, and the laying of new plantings has not yet reached the condition when they can be cut down and used. In short, there is not enough briar now, most of the pipes on the market are made from young briar.

By the way in 2017 Erica arborea was added to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List of Species. For now, Wikipedia shows Least Concern status assigned by the IUCN, but the very fact that Erica is now on the red list speaks for itself.

A lot of vintage stuff is headed to Asia, where there is a growing market and where they don't bitch about price.

Wait for the next economic collapse, Harris. The market bubble is starting to collapse, and the housing bubble will follow, though it will likely be a slower wind down. Then you'll have more pipes to choose from, just like what happened in 2007. See? There's always hope.

Harris, did you skip your meds? Did you not just post this very topic last week, and you even got a reply from Sykes. I mean, I guess you've expounded by asking about pipemakers like Todd, but SPc just had a drop of his pipes a few weeks ago, and I have heard rumors that he is not making as many these days.
Cos, I didn;t skip my meds, I took more than usual. I have no recollection of starting 2 threads back to back. Sorry if I bored you guys I was just thinking of shit to talk about. I had a bad day yesterday as I fell down hard and couldn't get up till my neighbor found me. That will teach me to get my groceries without my son being here. I am sore as shit today.

I don't know how it used to be since I just started acquiring pipes late last year, but seems to me there are tons of estate pipes all over the place. All the different sites plus ebay has bunches. They may not be great pipes all the time, but there are quite a few nice ones out there.
