A lot of folks say the white plume is sugar crystals, but I think I've read where Russ O says it is the solidification of tobacco oils. Although, my memory of Russ' comment may be faulty. What's the real final answer?

Yeah, it definitely isn't sugar crystals... taste it! Does not taste like sugar to me, it would be sweet if it were, tastes more like salt.

I've always thought the bloom was from crystallized oils, like on cigars.

Hawky, have you discovered a new way to re-hydrate your dried out flakes? :D

I work as a tobacconist and all I can say is that cigar plume(oils) is like a fine powder that rubs of fairly easily. And crystallized sugar looks like a small scale dimished light show.

+1 oldgeezer

Looks tasty enough though...love me some tobacco nudes

Dang it... my secret is out there now. Just lick your flakes until you're satisfied with the moisture content!
That's my secret too . . . . I lick all my tobacco before I put it away in a jar. :puffy:
As far as that cigar plume goes, yeah, it usually looks like a granular dust that wipes away with a finger.

I've looked at these flavor crystals under a hobby microscope, and they are not sugar crystals. They look like little round stalks of translucent material growing out of the tobacco. :puffy:

When tobacco is stored in consistent conditions (relative humidity and temperature) and has access to air, the oils disperse throughout the leafy evenly, then emerge to the surface and crystallize. In the cigar world, this is a sign of properly stored stogies.
That flake looks yummy, by the way ... :puffy:

I often get that with FVF and have looked at them under two pro microscopes (Meiji & Leica) and can say with certainty it isn't sugar. Far too rounded in form to be sugar.

Jay.
