I really enjoyed reading this blog post just now because I always like hearing how someone got started with pipes and how they enjoy them.

Clay pipes are probably pretty good starter pipes - no breaking in, the clay absorbs moisture and are easy to clean.

I'll bite...why don't you touch the bowl? Too hot? A buddy of mine mentioned recently that he was thinking of buying a clay pipe. Are they branded, so to speak, or just generic, as I consider corn cobs to be?
Thanks.

I too enjoyed reading your posting. Very well written.
To answer your question, the blend that comes to mind that has what appears to be a sinking ship is Sail. Though, I believe it is actually sailboats. Furthermore, Captain Black and Borkum Riff both are widely available OTC blends that also have ships on the front, though not sinking. Then of course you have the tinned blends such as Dunhill Elizabethan, Cornell and Diehl Black Frigate and Blockade Runner, and Samuel Gawith Navy Flake to name a few. But I would start with the over the counter blends as they are the most readily available. I hope this helps.
