As a new pipe smoker, I am reluctant to buy tins. With so many great bulk blends available, from C&D, Sutliff (while they are still around), and others, why pay more for tins? I get it that tins look much more presentable in pictures and on the display, but is that it? I mean, unless you are planning on keeping them for a decade and selling for more, is there any other reason why you would prefer a tin over bulk?

Too many blends that aren’t available in bulk are available in tins. Also, tins hold up in value and in age with little upkeep. There’s nothing quite like tobacco aged in the tin for 10 years and being popped for the first time. Trust and believe, most people don’t want your bulk after your tastes have changed years later.

For a new pipe smoker as yourself though, I say buy as many bulk options that peak your interests and save your money. It may take many blends to find a few that really speak to your rotation. Don’t be scared of a few tins though…many of my favorites are tin only.

I generally buy more in tins than bulk, I just find the quality of the mixture is better in tins that bulk. And I have a lot of bulk tobacco, but the consistency is higher In tins imo
Are you saying you prefer the tin version over the same blend in bulk? Could your judgement be skewed by the fact that tin just looks fancier?

I've bought some tins, but I'm scared to open them because I know I might be losing in resale value as opposed to bulk, which I can smoke right now. :D

No the tin doesn't matter, I've bought the same mixtures in both tin and bulk and I find the tins to be better. I know it sounds dumb, but bulk generally comes more on the dry side and more bitey

Well if you smoke one bowl a day in an average size pipe, one 1.75 oz (or 50 gram) tin is about 20-30 smokes. So unless you only plan to dip into an opened tin once a year... go ahead and pop some. Just, pop a few at a time. If it's available in bulk, you can order 1 oz to be able to taste it before popping the tin.

Otherwise, no need to be scared. Not all blends will be valuable in 10 years unopened anyway, and there's no real way to know now if what you have will even sell or be worth selling in the future.

Hell if I pop something new and don't like it, I just chuck the $12-15 in the trash, much easier than trying to find someone that wants to trade, fighting the line in the post office, etc.

I smoke 2-3 bowls a day on average. And if the same blend is available in bulk, why would I ever buy a tin? That's exactly what I'm asking. :)
