Apparently it took several serious injuries and at least four deaths before the powers that be decided a skateboard with only one wheel is dangerous

You wouldn't get me on one of those things with a full complement of four wheels, let alone just the one.

Things like that should be sold with a complimentary pair of crutches and bag of bandages.

Regards,

Jay.

I went out for a hike last weekend and some guy was tearing up the mountain trail on one of these bad boys:IMG_4574.jpeg
Not really my style, but I thought it was neat that it was ostensibly stable enough to ride on a somewhat steep trail. I think they’re interesting, but the foot placement necessitates you to stand in a decidedly dorky stance while riding. With a skateboard, scooter, etc, you have a nice front foot-back foot stance, on these ones you look like you’re waiting in line for a coffee. Doesn’t carry the sporty sexiness of most rideables!

Last year one of my neighbor-across-the-street's kids got one of those things. (They sound really weird, btw, like a 1950's SF movie)

Not long after, I was in the shop and heard a siren outside so went on my porch to see what was up.

It was an amberlamps.

The kid had managed to face-plant on a LCIIO (Large Cast Iron Immovable Object) that's close to the edge of the sidewalk a couple houses down. Talking about a fire hydrant. Apparently he wobbled or swerved a bit, tried to stop, and pitched into it at significant speed.

Messy business, it was.

Seeing there's a known defect with the gadget now makes me wonder if that isn't what happened.

I would rather my nephews ride a unicycle. They have skateboards but they want one of these. My sister is dead set against it but her husband wants to get them one. I guess I'll have to have another one of our talks again.
Yeah tell them not to do it. A good buddy of mine was a huge fan of the One Wheel and used to go on huge group rides down in FL. UNTIL this exact thing happened to him. Riding along and it just locked up, throwing him into a concrete curb, taking a gigantic chunk of meat out of his forearm. It's a great concept, on paper, but the way they implemented the motor control is asinine, and this isn't a new issue. The company deserves everything they have coming.

When I first saw them, I was a little worried. That looks like exactly the dumb thing my kids would love. But luckily for me, the first one on our block to have one was a real obnoxious jerk. That killed the taste for one of those real quick. I wasn't exactly happy to see him faceplant after hitting a parked car (not mine), but I wasn't broken up either.

Com 'on! Where's your sense of adventure! If you don't get a good solid concussion, is that even fun? You have full set of front teeth? Look at those hockey players! Here I thought skateboard at 55/56 will get me well sorted, and busted my rib cage rolling off the bed. Sitting on a recliner can be a death trap!
