I'm in the process of moving to a house with a lot more room for outdoor projects. First on my list is to add a few farm animals to the estate.. Goats ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? will be my first endeavor. Who has goats?
Do you have a cliff to push them to if you get lonely? That's the deal breaker on a property with goats, in my opinion.
Rubber boots!? Ok... now I'm curious.
But, uh, back to goats... I knew a guy who had a dozen or so of them and he made great cheese. You interested in milking or meat?
He sold to some high end restaurants in Rio, and did well enough to sustain himself. Very small production, but it was a premium market.
My trusty billy passed recently, he was the last of my goats. We have plans for the farm, and we’ve decided to not raise anymore until we get things settled. I also raise rabbits. And, since I started making mead, I’ve been prepping for bees.
I’ve also had chickens and ducks. No cows or pigs, but if plans go through, we will.
What did you want to know?
We used to make a mean smoked cheese.Yea, I'll let you think about those boots until you figure it out.. took me a minute with the cliff thing, fair is fair. ?
We have a market for people buying them live, for bbq purposes. There are a few auctions around for selling. I'd like to get into processing (meat and cheese) for myself, and see how it goes. I'll mostly be trying to break even, just for a hobby.
And for some damned reason they love to stand on your car.My mom used to have goats on her little organic farm. They were pretty funny animals. They can climb trees.

They don’t need much, about like dogs. If you don’t have at least an acre for them, just stick with three. They’re very social animals. My billy, Jackstraw, followed me like a dog at the farm. He walked behind the tractor like it was his job. But, when it was only him, he became a son of a bitch, ha ha.The first thing I'm considering is what kind of fence is required. Next, is how much space per goat?
They also make awesome usable goods. Goat leather (chevre) is very scratch resistant. They’re tasty.?
I’ve got racks and racks of rabbit fur. My wife wants a bedspread made out of it.They also make awesome usable goods. Goat leather (chevre) is very scratch resistant.
Tall and sturdy. Never kept any personally, but know folks who have. I'll never forget the time a few of us were smoking on a number at a peach farm in California and watching the goats in the pen. One of the goats walked up to the fence (about 7 ft tall), looked at it and just leaped right over it without a running start or anything. It took a while to get him cornered, roped and back into the pen.The first thing I'm considering is what kind of fence is required. Next, is how much space per goat?
You need to spend a little time around some goats. They are very intelligent, like dogs. Fencing and such depends on what sort of relationship you have with them. The first thing I'm considering is what kind of fence is required.
