This is my recent estate buy. I nice Whitehally. I thought the tan streaks were part of the finish at first but now see it is merely dust in the recesses of the rough surface (not sure what to call this syle of surface, sorry).

Time to start getting this one online. I did a surface cleaning of one half of the pipe to show. Then I started a salt treatment to the bowl. I learned the hard way, but now when I retort my pipes or a salt treatment, I cover the surface in Vaseline to keep the alcohol from splashing and ruining the finish. You'd be surprised how easy it is to lose a drop of alcohol from your dropper when filling the bowl.

I've got an old Whitehall Suffolk myself - had it forever. It's a 1/4 drop Dublin, but otherwise much like yours. Not the best pipe in my rotation, but it smokes pretty well.

Jud,
Is yours thick walled on the bowl like mine? I figured this will smoke on the cool side.

I've a straight Whitehall Dublin that I found at an antique store. Same finish as yours. It's a good pipe, but not a favorite. The bowl is too wide for flakes and deeper than I prefer for English's. But, when I DO feel like smoking some Westminster for an hour and a half, I'll reach for it.

English pipe (Suffolk) with Italian briar. I bet it will clean up nicely. Looks like Kaywoodie Nutone carving, a bit.

BTW, the pipe in my kisser in my av pic is that Whitehall I mentioned. According to Pipedia, Whitehalls were made by Ben Wade.

Nice find! Looking forward to seeing the complete restoration. I have a MasterCraft with a similar finish they call "Satin". Not sure if it is the same but looks close.
