I've been thinking, which languages can you speak/read/understand? For me it's Afrikaans, Dutch(Hollands) & Flemmish, to read, write and speak. German to read only (although if spoken slowly enough I can understand enough to get the gist).
How about you peoples?

I too have a working knowledge of English.

I am "barely" functional in Spanish.

I've had a couple of years of German, but don't know enough to get my face slapped.

I can read latin, albeit slowly. (Took it in high school and a couple of semesters at U of M, just for the hell of it.)

I know one way to count from one to ten in Japanese.

And, as many of you know, of course; I'm fluent in Red Neck.

For example: "Ah-ain't saw all-y'all innalaaawng tahm."

I also know a few words in Italian: Ascorti, Cavicchi, Ardor, and fumare la pipa.

I'm fluent in both redneck and hick. I'd say I'm only semi-fluent in English as almost every day I hear new words that I don't know :)

As a proper American, with absolutely no gift for languages whatsoever, I speak American English. :D I have a smattering of Latin from high school, and can count to 10 in Finnish. :puffy:

Fluent in English, Spanish, and German. Can read French, conversely can speak some Japanese but not read too much Kanji. I can read a handful of words in Chinese as a result but that hardly counts :P.
I can also read Latin, Old English (not as in Shakespeare, as in Beowulf), Middle English, two different Old German dialects (not counting Old 'English' :P) and getting there with ancient Greek(Athenian c. 4th BC). Theoretically I can speak them all too, but due to huge chunks of grammatical rules no longer being known, pronunciation not being known, and not having anyone on this whole blue earth to speak them -to- I've never said more than the odd word or two out lout, maybe a phrase of Latin here or there.

I'm fluent in Swedish and English and speak a fair bit of Japanese. Recently started learning Lojban but am still limited to certain phrases and grammar and have no vocabulary. I've studied Spanish for three years and German for one, but I only remember random phrases and words.

English, Mandarin (though my reading and writing skills suffer horribly from atrophy), a little French and aven less Japanese.
Forgive my ignorance, Nemrod, but what is Lojban?

I'm completely fluent in English and Spanish, though I can read Portuguese, Italian and French really well. Essentially those three are to Spanish what thick Scottish accents are to a hillbilly. :laughat:
I also can "get by" with reading ancient Greek. Post classical era though.

I speak English, German, a wee bit of Spanish (just enough to find out how drunk you are) a tad Arabic (enough to ask you where the bombs are) and just enough French to get kicked in the balls reeeeaaally hard

English only, but lived in Mexico for a while. I can communicate slightly in Spanish. Worked on a Masters in linguistics, so a very tiny amount of many many languages. Also 2 years of French, Greek, and some German and Russian.

I'm pretty good with English, I know a few words in German, I can read Latin, and I know enough Polish to be polite and tell polish girls they have beautiful eyes. Oh and Sarcasm, fluent in that.

Fluent in German.
English, I wouldn't say was my "second" language per se, I learned them together as a result of a German mother and an American father stationed in Germany and growing up there. But I spoke German far more than I did English well into my teens and continue to do so whenever mom calls or stops by.
I used to be a fairly decent speaker of Russian as well. But I could hardly speak it today. i can still read and understand the Russian alphabet, but I have no idea what the words mean when I do.
Later in life I served in the Air Force and as a result I can speak a little Korean and a little Japanese but not enough of either of them to ever have a conversation with a fluent speaker.
I used to know a fair amount of Thai after having been married to a Thai woman for a number of years. But, we've been divorced for almost 5 years and my ability to speak Thai is slipping fast.

Forgive my ignorance, Nemrod, but what is Lojban?
It's an artificial language, much like Esperanto. It's not particularly well known so I'd be surprised if anyone knew of it on here. :)

You can find more info on lojban.org
