I live in Columbia, SC, and don't of any places that sell quality Pipe Tobacco. Used to be places in Columbia years ago but none that I can find now.. I think there is a place at Myrtle Beach and maybe Charleston. Thought some of the local smokers may know of a place in the Midlands.
Thanks - Toadshade

Hi toad, and first, the important business: welcome to the forum! We're mighty glad to have you here. Now as to your question, I should like to recommend Low Country Pipe & Cigar in Little River, South Carolina. They are the brick-and-mortar component of smokingpipes.com. Here you will find the best in pipes, tobaccos, accessories, and just good friendly service.

Toad:
If you like Latakia forward English blends, Low Country Black is one of the best out there. I love the stuff - it's almost as good as DH Nightcap.

I'm from South Carolina, haven't lived there for decades but my number one choice for pipes and tobacco is also Low Country Pipe & Cigar in Little River, South Carolina. There are several decent shops in the Charleston area but they are prevalently cigar vendors.

As you may have detected, Low Country, and its online presence smokingpipes.com, is the mother church

of pipe and tobacco sales online -- not to disrespect the many fine sponsors of this site which are listed

in red at the left of the home page. But right now, Low Country/smokingpipes.com is the leader in a well

designed online retail site and an expansive inventory. The pipes can be pricey, but they also have some

bargains seeded into the mix, and discounts from time to time. But also check out our other sponsors,

who each have competitive edges in various areas and some pipes and tobaccos not carried by others.

Smokingpipes.com gives incredible service to me, a state away; I joke that they have the package in the

mail before I click out online. They bought a pipe to a nearby pipe show to save me shipping. Good crew.

If you are willing to drive to Charlotte, NC, just about 1hr and 15min North on I-77, McCranie's is located off of Park Road in Park Road Shopping Center. Their tobacco selection is top notch. Their house blends are great as well.

Thanks! That's a good deal closer than Little River. I intend to go to Little River to check that place out though. Their webside looks great. Thanks for all the comments.

If you go to Low Country, make sure you understand that you'll probably find it difficult to find another B&M that compares to it by a shop that caters to pipe smoking. The bulk wall alone is unreal. They also have a decent sized cigar humidor too. Also, if you know of a blend that they sell on line, that they don't have IN the store, ask a clerk if the "other building" has it.
The "other building" is where smokingpipes.com is run. Incidentally, if you have the time. Ask one of the guys in the shop if anyone is available to take you on a tour. Just tell them you frequent the pipes magazine forums and wouldn't mind seeing the operation.
I made mention of stopping in on the forums here a month or so ago, and I was contacted by the Manager of operations there asking if I would like a tour of the "behind-the-scenes of smokingpipes.com" As soon as I get my lazy ass in gear, I'll post the photos. What a cool place to work.

It's becoming evident with the Internet and forums like this, and online ordering, that the need for a local tobacco store around Columbia has diminished. They were a couple around town 30 years ago. But even then I recall only having one friend that smoked a pipe. On this forum I already have 12 fellow hobbyists giving feedback and welcome advice on the subject. And I haven't even smoked my first pipe yet. Pretty good tradeoff for some local color. They should be here on Wednesday. For those who don't know I'm starting the hobby again after a 30 layoff from tobacco. There's a lot to catch up on.
