I'd like to have a pipe made completely out of wood, from the bowl to the stem to the mouthpiece. I haven't the tools or the skill to make one myself. All I can find that is for sale are Lord of the Rings type pipes, but I want something more traditional and, well...less geeky.
The pipe can be made of a wood bowl and detachable wood stem (easier to clean) or it can be made of one single piece of solid wood (more craftsmanship).
Any thoughts or advice?

There are others, just search in the pipes section under "wood tip", "wooden tip", "Briar bit" "all wood" etc etc etc....

No offense, but those Ebay pipes look pretty shoddy.

If you want a very well made pipe with a briar stem, you can't beat the pipes Genod has been putting out.

I make pipes 6-7 days a week, and I've been tempted to snag one myself. I've seen them in person and they look great.

You can't go wrong buying them from a site sponsor and all around great guys at Smokers Haven in Ohio.

If you scroll down the page at that link, the last two Genods have briar stems. You might also look at the ones with horn stems if comfort is what you are striving for.

Lonestar,

thanks for pointing out those newer Genods, I hadn't come by them yet, they look pretty damn cool!!!!

I'd definitely want one at that price point!

especially a shape like this:

...although that pot at Smokers Haven is pretty fetching too...hmmmm.
I've been wanting something like that ever since I saw the Kaywoodie Allbriar, and that desire was recently reinvigorated when I took better notice of the Butera version in an old issue of P&T...
...my solution for a quality version of one of these has been to approach Wayne Teipen for a commission, and he liked the idea --- right now it's still in the embryonic stages, but when/if it ever gets done, you can be sure I'll be showing it off here!!!!
In the meantime, I've been looking for other examples just to gauge all the different approaches that makers have taken, not too many out there to find, but here's what I've found so far...

Update:
Just minutes after reading Lonestar's excellent suggestion, and actually pointing out their existence, I ordered one of those bad boys!
I'll report on its qualities after a few bowls.

These are all very good suggestions for some very beautiful pipes. As of right now, I don't want to spend over $100 on a pipe, but I will definitely refer back to this page when I am ready to spend more on a higher quality pipe.
I think I'll patiently wait and watch pipes that pop up on ebay. I know, most of the pipes there are "shotty," but after seeing the prices on the other pipes, it'll be worth the wait for something decent to come up with an ebay price...even though that could take a year or so of diligent searching. Thanks woodsroad! I didn't think to search "wooden tip." That really helped my search.
Judging from some of those gorgeous vintage Kaywoodies misterlowercase posted, I might just find a quality pipe for a decent price. Very nice misterlowercase! Thank you!
And thank you all for the advice, links, and beautiful pictures!

There's been so many horror stories about MacQueen pipes... I'm honestly baffled why people keep recommending them. :|

I've heard some mixed things about the MacQueen pipes...some say the work well, others say they require modifications and are just too inconvenient.
The price is right and they look cool, but I'm not sure if I'd be comfortable smoking one outside of a Ren. Faire or something. And they seem to be a hit or a miss in the realm of quality construction.
But, I do appreciate the price savvy junkyarddawg for advising a reasonably priced pipe :)

Then there are the Old Dominion cobs, and while the bowl is a cob and not strictly speaking wood, the

stem is bamboo. Similar if not strictly all wood.

Lots of people have said if you want a MacQueen, to buy them from a third party. Pipes and Cigars has them in stock now. If you order one from MacQueen, you are going to wait for months. There was a vendor at the last Chicago Pipe Show that sold them. I didn't pull the trigger, but might this year if they are back.
