Where is the rim?

I've had my pipes for a few months now, and I recently discovered I was cleaning them wrong. I corrected myself, but I then realized I was confused about one thing. Is the rim of the pipe the area just outside the bowl? Or the area right below at the enterance?

The rim would be considered the top surface of the bowl. (Outside, not interior)

And so have you been scraping karst off the "rim" with a penknife and sandpaper?

No, I've been using a spit covered q-tip to remove tar from the outside part

There's a lot of great videos on YouTube for new pipe smokers. I'd suggest looking there. Helped me a great deal when I was starting out.

The rim, as in most things that have a rim, is around the hole. With a pipe, the hole is the chamber.
