I've got this estate Unsmoked pipe Marked "Germany" and it either has like a V or a U with a circle around it
Its like a bent apple and looks like those typical Vauens - it has a very high gloss red lacquer and bowl is carbon coated
I don't think it's a Vauen though
takes a 9mm filter
When did these types of 9mm generic looking pipes begin to be manufactured?
Do they smoke well?
I was going to take out the carbon coat, and give it a smoke but I don't even have 9mm filters or an adaptor ad was thinking not to even bother with such a pipe when I have a lot nicer pipes- but theres always the wonder and thought -"it could be a good smoke..."

If you want to try it just put 2 6mm balsa filters together. They fit great in my 9mm.

I don't know about their origins, but I think 9 mm filter pipes took off big-time in Europe after the Surgeon General's report on smoking in the U.S. and questions were raised about smoking and health in the 1960's. In the U.S., 6 mm filters filled this need, mostly. In Europe the charcoal 9 mm filters were the thing, and still are. The 9 mm Kemberling (Austrian) pipe I have smokes well with no filter or adaptor, as do many 9 mm pipes. Some may not because the airway has too much turbulence in the open draw, but that's pure speculation; I've never heard the complaint.

I know the first cigarette filters were introduced around the turn of the century. Pipe filters didn’t really see any widespread use until the 1950’s, and even then it was mainly European.

I may give it a whirl without any filter or adaptor
Ive heard those adapters are good at best and can be a major pain in the ass at times
I have 2 filter pipes - both estates that I don't look at often - a Sav and this german one -
The Sav smoked great and 'open' without a filter - but now I considered the adapter - but meh -
seems pointless wasting $6-10 with the shipping etc as most of my other pipes are filterless and Ive smoked all my life without one - one can always pack tighter, right?
Tongue bite doesn't really cause me heartache and I'm not european;) so I'm not likely to go for a charcoal filter

Filters and questions about them are a continual annoyance for new pipe smokers, and most buy a pipe with or without a filter they don't want. Luckily most pipes can be smoked without filter or an adaptor, but the perpetual confusion is a blight of pipe smoking.
